Leroy has arrived! UPDATED with pictures =)

Postby cml » Sat Jan 07, 2012 1:22 pm

Today I picked up Stitch's new friend, Leroy the bronze winged pionus :D . He looks great and when he's settled in a little more I will try to get some pics for you all =).

All in all it took me 8 hours of train travelling, but he is now here, and starting to calm down I hope. The trip was long and I imagine he was quite stressed, despite riding in a covered travelling cage. Everything went smoothly except putting him in his cage, at which point he slipped away from my grip and flew in under a desk. He crashed a little, but I think he is okay, I will be checking on him to make sure though, of course.

Being a parentraised aviary bird, the taming might take longer than it did with Stitch, but I hope everything will go well and that Stitch and Leroy will get along. I think we are spoiled with Stitch, he is such a nice and tame parrot, and he knew step up when he arrived. All he wants to do now is be with us, cuddle and trick train.

This is probably ggonna be a lot tougher so any and all advice is appreciated. =)

I will keep you updatefd with our progress and pics! :D

A little update:

Leroy seems to feel more comfortable, he has walked around in his cage this evening, after sitting still for almost 24hours. He also just started eating, and ate some seeds (I gave him seeds to be sure that he would eat these first few days. He is VERY quiet and has only made noise for about 1 min at about midday.

He is relaxed when we approach the cage, but a little wary of hands.

Congradulations.

Just keep in mind that no two kids are alike. My human kids are exact opposites. Can you imagine what that was like.

Thank you Liz,

yeah I know they will have different personalities. I think its too early so far to tell how Leroy is gonna turn out, since he just arrived though.

Today he has eaten some more, and is moving around the cage, as long as Im not in the same room. I think he is cooling down a little, and is starting to adapt to his new environment. He is still wary, but not freaked out, towards me and my wife.

Update, Leroy has been here for 5 days now, and is totally calm in our presence. He's also successfully been converted to a full pellet diet, which was easy as the breeder had them eat a lot of different things.

He will not, however, take treats from our hands through the bars. Any suggestions here save for the basic training guide, ie, just waiting till he does?
He loves seeds and almonds, so thats what we are trying with at the moment.

We would love to be able to start target train him, so that we can get him in and out of the cage in a good way, but we are kinda waiting for him to start trusting us enough to eat from our hands first. He's a wonderful little guy, but this is a totally different experience than we had with Stitch who was supereasy to teach and tame. With time I hope to achieve the same thing with Leroy, but any advice is appreciated!

Glad to see that he is already settling in! Great to see that he is already eating pellets, you did good by making the conversion as early as possible.

The issue with feeding through the bars of his cage is, the cage is a home to him, his territory, he probably doesn't like you feeding him through the bars because you are intruding in his territory. After he has bonded to you more, he will start to accept this, then to him, it will be like a little gift and he will enjoy it and not think of it as intruding.

Good luck with Leroy!

Yes I know you advocate this method Liz :) , but I want to be able to target train him before letting him out, so I dont have to force him back in the cage. I study at university and my wife is going back to working full time in a weeks time, and I dont trust Leroy to be out by himself. I need a way to get him back before letting him out ^^. But if we cant progress, then eventually he will have to go outside, if only to stretch his wings.
