Cockatiels are supposed to be monogamous. When Sweetie died, Shadow courted Tammy. She left Tommy to be with him.

Do they? I had no idea.. I did try and research which genders go well together (especially when not initially raised together) and the internet is just such a big mess of information and misinformation that I never found a conclusive answer.

Well, in that case I have my fingers crossed for that outcome too! (:

Yes, unfortunately for us, parrot keepers, the internet has all kinds of contradictory information when it comes to husbandry and, in truth, tiels are so mild-mannered and flock oriented that even birds of the same gender can have a wonderful relationship with each other but, when in doubt, always go to nature and nature made tiels highly social AND monogamous so that tells us without the shadow of a doubt that a male and female pair is the best possible situation for them.

Amos is the Tiel that was suppose to have seizures. When called it took me a while and with a lot of support from this forum I decided to get him. By the time I got him she had put another Tiel that I named Andy. (Wolf came up with the names. I was kind of running out of ideas.) They had only been together a few day but I took them both. When released into the flock they stayed together but joined in. I have had them for a while (unless I go back and read in Rambo & Myrtle, time really means nothing to me.) Andy is trying to court Maggie and is with her a lot but he still spends time with Amos. I now know that cockatiels do not mate for life (Tommy & Tammy) but a buddy is forever.

It's not that its normal for them to switch mates, Liz. It's that they like to choose it themselves and, in captivity, they often have one or two choices (if they are lucky!) instead of lots as they would in a flock so, sometimes, they 'hook up' with the 'one they are with' but, when one they like better comes along, they switch. In the wild, they pretty much stay with the original mate.

But you are 100% right that bromances last. I had two male cousins that came together and they were BFF all their lives.
