Joe and family.

Postby Rokisha » Fri Mar 23, 2012 11:06 pm

Well we got our keys to our new apartment, four bedroom and loving the size. We moved alot of our stuff today so joe stayed with my hubby's grandmother during that time and when we went to pick her up and bring her here his grandmother said she was whistling and chirping the entire time we were gone.
As soon as we went and got her she calmed down and now she is sitting atop her cage in the living room as happy as can be lol. I'd post more but I'm pretty worn out from all the moving so I'll post more info later on. I plan n posting up some pics and videos of joe later on as well. Hope all of you are having a good day and night. Blessed be to everyone here.

Well after reading about being able to tell the birds age from the bracelet on it's leg I took a look at joe's and it says JC 4708 so I am assuming that means she was hatched april seventh in 2008.
I have to just say that if that is true then the people at petco really don't know much about the birds they keep there. The guy told me she was just under a year but beings as how her eyes are bright yellow and after reading about the young ones having grey eyes I checked her bracelet. Now the guy was nice in suggesting things to get her as far as the cage and pellets but since she is almost four, if im guessing right, i don't think they should claim all their birds to be babies like he did.
Well... now that I know her birthday, or at least think her birthday is in april, I have to make plans for her birthday party lol. On another note, my hubby just took a new picture of her and I'm envious of how clear it turned out lol. I don't know how he does it but everytime i do something he always manages to do it better lol.

The numbers on your bird's leg band don't have anything to do with when it was hatched. My Dante hatched on Nov 28, 2009, for example, and his band ends with 2729. The letters typically indicate the breeder and the numbers are probably just a sequential ID assigned to the bird more or less at random. The breeder probably had several birds hatching on the same day as your bird and certainly wouldn't give them all the same number.

I'm not sure how quickly Senegals' eyes turn yellow, but it sounds like your bird was at least a year old when you got her. If you want to celebrate her birthday, I'd say just pick an "official" day and celebrate it then. That's what I've done with Nikko and Maxwell. Nikko's "birthday" is Beltane, April 30th, and Maxwell's is Samhain, October 31st. Even Jesus' birthday is completely made up, and if that's good enough for him it should be just fine for your Senegal! :)

Well I'm still working on the talking but I did get joe to shake my finger today while saying hello lol. I know I'm not posting to much info but I promise I will get into more details later when I have the time. I also found out she really enjoys getting scritched under her wings today. She started bobbing her head and making chirping, cooing noises.

Something joe has been doing recently is grabbing at one of her toys, hanging upside down and flapping like crazy while screeing. She then coos and chirps but does it again, not sure what this is? Afterwards she rolls around and i figure the rolling is playing but could anyone explain what the flapping and screeing is? Is it a form of play as well or no?

Unless her foot/toe or some body part is caught on the toy, then I would say it is a form of playing. While visiting a parrot store, I saw this bonded pair of Rainbow Lorikeets playing on a giant rope toy (kinda like a boing). It had little acrylic dice hanging off it and smaller ropes for the bird to hang off of. One Lorikeet was hanging upside down screeching, flapping it's wing biting the dice having a hay day. The Lorikeet was fun to watch. :)

Leroy does this as well sometimes, and he is generally not spooked. Sometimes he does it to annoy Stitch, other times he just wants to stretch his wings I think.
As long as it isnt something done excessively, I think you should be ok.

Yeah she only did it twice so i'm guessing it was just play. She actually spoke today which suprised me lol. i was petting her saying cutey bird and she did a clicking noise and said cutey bird right back. Suprised the heck out of me lol. Tried to get her to say it again in front of hubby but all she did was make the clicking noise.
