R.I.P. Indy, my first bird ... :(

Postby DanielA » Fri Apr 20, 2012 1:28 pm

Two weeks ago I bought a Tovi Parakeet from a flea market, he was suffering incredibly, and I decided I would save him.
I live in Colombia, so I was 100% sure that he was a nest-wild caught. These parrots are native to a range of height of about 500-1000 feet, and tropical temperatures no lower than 60-70 degrees Farenheit. But I live in the capital, Bogota, at more than 7500 feet, and we are in the rainy season, meaning that temperatures don't go over 40 degrees farenheit. He shivered in his cage, I bought several blankets, but to no avail. I took him to the vet, and told me he was in a very delicate state, that any little drop of temperature could kill him. I took lots of care of him making sure that he would be warm. But I left the window open for a bit to much in the night, and the next morning when I woke up to take him out of the cage, he was dead. :( I am really depressed right now, I don't know what to do, I feel lost, even though he was only with me for a few weeks, he really changed my life.
But I do wan't another bird, I really do. I think I might go for a lovebird, or a cockatiel.

Disinfect everything and put it out in the sun.

Look for a rescue or rehome if you can.

Oh no I'm so sorry to read this :( at least Tovi had a wonderful loving home for her last two weeks.
Give yourself time to grieve the loss of your little friend, and a rehome bird is a good idea for next time once everything's disinfected.

That is so sad but at least you know those precious few weeks you had her was a much better life than she would otherwise have had.
Take your time to grieve then when your ready another companion will join your life when the time is right.

Thank you everybody for your kind responses. I actually visited a rehome today and fell crazily inlove with two baby peach faced lovebirds :swaying:. The owners had bought the birds but a month later they left them at the rescue for no reason at all, I really liked them and I told the rescue's owner that he save them for me because I was going to buy them. I think that grieving for a lost being is important, but for a while, and them just try again to think in the stuff that you did before with that being. (If it's a bird, then buy another one). So I really think that its about time to stop grieving and try again!

Sorry for your loss. It's great that the bird had a few great weeks in its life before he passed away.
