Clear and Present Danger

Postby Graybeard » Fri Apr 27, 2012 2:26 pm

The woman across the street has a young half-breed Serval, which is about 20 pounds, and will grow to 30. In case you don't know, the Serval is an African wild cat that is being cross bred with domestics in the US. Bongo is like half dog, riding on the dash of the car, etc. She always keeps him on a leash in the yard, but he got away this morning.

I've always built cat doors into our outside doors for our cats, now just two old ones. This morning, Bongo came in the cat door, and upstairs to our office/birdroom and bedroom. One cat split, while the other was just hanging out with Bongo, when my wife walked in. Bongo sauntered back downstairs and out.

Chewbaca, the RB2, was seven feet up a perch, and still easy prey for Bongo, while Graybeard, the CAG, was in our bathroom, on top of the shower stall. Bongo didn't seem to pay much attention to Chewbaca, but who knows...

Guess I gotta' buy a troublesome commercial cat door with magnetic sensors so only a cat with a magnet on its neck can come in. PITA.

This has got to be some kind of a joke, right? Please don't tell me you actually have these types of cats around your birds. Are you crazy!!! What are you thinking??? I can't even begin to tell you how many horror stories I know that have involved domestic cats that weigh only ten pounds or under. All I can say is I really don't understand why you have birds. I think for the sake of those birds you should rehome them so that they can have a life without predators around them. It is only a matter of time before there is sure disaster and those birds will pay with their lives! Not to mention the trauma they are now experiencing from just being around them. This is just nothing more than complete lunacy!

Sorry if I misunderstood. I still think that cats and birds don't mix regardless of the size of the cat.

Yeah I'd never have my budgies anywhere near a cat. Though my sister wants one even though she's allergic.
Though I work with a woman who owns quite a few birds, and she also has cats. But she's trained the cats, from when they were young, not to even look at their birds cages. She says if the cats look at the direction of the birds all she has to do is say 'No' and the cats walk away.

i have a dog and a cat, everyone gets along fine the cat tries to touch tailfeathers but as soon as the birds face her she pulls her paw back.the only interest the dog has is when birds are eating she waits for them to throw her what they don't want.

I would not trust my daughters cats with my cockatiels. My cats came in as kittens and the tiels were already established. My cats respect them as other kids in the house.

My Amazons walk among them with no problem. Rambo was raised with dogs and cats and knows how to put fear in them if he doesn't like what they are doing. Because of that, Myrtle got their respect on first day.

I have a pet door. The first week I had Rambo he was still living on the dining room table. Mom and I were out shopping when my aunt heard a cry for help. She said she heard "help help hurry come're" and ran to find out what it was. The neighbors cat had come in. While my aunt was chasing the cat, Rambo was yelling "catch it put it out". All the while the dogs are also chasing it and barking while Rambo yelled.
