HELP with the senegal parrot

Postby loukas » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:58 am

Hi everyone
I found a senegal parrot that he is 1 year old and i want to buy him. Do you think that is the right age to train him with the basic training? Senegal parrots are easy to train or not? When i buy him i should put him in a place without start training or anything else, to meet the persons and the environment? How much hours of training did he need at first? Beggining from step up and stay on my hand and on my shoulder to more difficult tricks. By the way at first i will use the clicker to train him?
Thank you very much :senegal:

I think you should definitely buy the Senegal parrot that you like.

I suggest you go and look at the parrot first and note the environment in which the parrot is kept in. The reason I am saying this is because there are a lot of illegal trades selling parrots. If you are suspicious then don't buy the parrot; this means that another poor parrot will replace the one you bought.

The owner, whoever they may, should want to know about you. If they don't, they may be desperate to sell the parrot which suggests something wrong.

The bottom line is that you should take no risks whatsoever in buying this senegal. Buying a parrot is a big thing.
I hope I have helped you.

A clicker could help, but I have found with my senegal that simply loving him and applauding his success with Yahoo! and clapping my hands. He will happily shriek to the world that he has succeeded and been give praise. I am not afraid of his beak, handling it gently, and as it ages, to scrape the old excess stuff off with a thumb or fingernail. I also give him (and this may be gross to some,) French kisses. I believe that he interprets my behavior to mean that I am, symbolically, giving him nourishment. I highly recommend you read the book called "Of Parrots and People," by Mira Tweti, published Penguin Books, 2009. This book can help you decide whether or not you want to share your life with a sentient being of another species.

Please stop kissing your parrot like that. You are putting him at a very large risk of getting sick/dying. Saliva contains bacteria, you may have got away with it so far but there will always be the one time your birds immune system cannot fight the bacteria, whether it be the first time you do it or several years down the line. It really is not worth the risk.
