Wiki's Budgie Tricks

Postby Wiki » Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:16 am

Hi everyone!

Well I'm 5 months into clicker training with Wikileaks ( :budgie: ), and we're still enjoying it! I've put together a little video with him doing his tricks, and he did fairly well considering that he wasn't really in a state of food deprivation at the time, so while he wanted the rewards he wasn't perhaps as motivated as he could have been :-)

Here's the video:

Michael's videos of Duke inspired me to start wokring with this little guy, and Norman Barrett's videos remind everyone that the little guys love to work just as hard as the big guys!

Excellent, well done.

May I ask where you got the little basket from for the ball?
Are you planning on teaching him anything else?

You can see you've worked hard with wiki to achieve all that.

Wiki isn't just trained. You have given him enrichment and he is loving every minute of it. He would probably do it without treets but won't turn them down either.

I can see by his actions that you are a loving attentive parent.

The basket came from the South Australian Bird Company - they're genuine bird lovers who stock a fantastic array of bird enrichment items for birds of all sizes, at all kinds of prices and even parts for DIY toymakers. I've bought some fantastic budgie-sized toys there, including foot toys. I regularly pop by and show his progress to the lovely lady in the shop who started his hand training.

Are you planning on teaching him anything else?

Definitely! We're working on behaviours like nod and shake, shake hands, and we'll be doing more prop work. When he eventually moults and regains the ability to fly we'll work on recall flying. He's only just started talking, so we're working on that too.

It certainly makes the news more interesting to watch :D

He will sometimes just do it for scratches, which is good for us both. He's definitely a "Mummy's Bird" now, and I think there's nothing sweeter than a warm little budgie sleeping on your hand.

Yay for the little guys! :budgie:

You can see all the effort you put in, and it turned out great. And as for the name, I love different names (says the person who named her bird Pantalaemon lol) and I think Wiki is very cute.

For those of you out there with little guys, the Zoo Max psitta puzzles (like this one ) in the smallest size are able to be handled by budgies! Wiki can pick up the shape pieces and the counters for the bank. The bank box is a little too tall for him, but a platform helps him get to the slot.

I've noticed he gets frustrated more easily with the psitta puzzles, though - he'll take an easy trick (slinky run, flight recall) over a harder one any day, so I have to really work with the motivation.

I've also started conditioning for toilet training, I think it's a bit trickier with the little birds, but I've got one of these which I keep handy to use as a "potty perch" when we're spending time together and I'm getting better at reading his body language :-)
