Seeing Success!!!

Postby Stephoklein » Wed Aug 01, 2012 8:11 am

My new parrot Odie was biting quite a bit when I first got him. I felt like it was a mixture of fear and control biting. At first I didn't know how to approach the issue since there isso much conflicting advice online, until I came here! I have been doing what other users suggested, which was to ignore it and I must say it is working! Here is a little snapshot of something that happened.

Odie was playing with some foot toys with me on the couch. He wanted to carry his foot toy up and play standing on me, but I kept moving the foot toy down... If he stayed put for a few minutes I would treat him. Well 5 minutes in he puts down the foot toy and looking at me bends down and bites my arm. Slowly he starts applying more pressure and I just ignored. Then when he let go I made him step up, target and treated him. Then I put him back down. After 5 minutes he tried to climb up again and when I didn't let him he came back over to my arm and did it again (all the whole staring at me!). This time not as hard or for as long. After that he stopped completely and just kind of gave up! He played with his toy and recieved his treats.

It was almost like you could see him working it out. He was absolutely perplexed when I didn't scream or jump when he bit me! Now I am working on handling and he is doing so well! Thank you for everyone's help on this site!!

You are doing well  It might take a a while to train him to not bite you, but in the long run, it is really worth it. Keep it up ;)
