New baby met Iago!

I visited my new baby today at the bird shop- took my 2 year old boy Iago to meet his new sister! it went so well! Within 10 seconds of playing on the same play stand they were trying to feed one another. Over the next hour and a half they tried to feed each other, preened each other and cuddled as well as just hung out on the play tree. Not once did either of them show any signs of aggression!

I am over the moon with first introductions! She will be coming home within the next 2-3 weeks and until then I plan to take Iago up every weekend to visit. I will still be housing her in a second cage and doing introductions here at home, but I am beyond thrilled and hopeful for a positive relationship between my two babies!

Wow, sounds like a horrible store to be getting a bird from... if they'd let you bring your bird in out of the blue and have it interact with a baby (with weaker immune system), then just imagine how anyone can bring a sick bird in and contaminate the entire flock.

Michael- Thank you for your opinion! I love how optimistic you always are! I'm ecstatic too with the introductions and am thrilled to be bringing my new daughter into the family!

To be fair, Michael has more than a good point. No birds should ever be introduced without being quarantined first. A month is the minimum recommended quarantine time. This isn't recommened because the experts want to ruin all pet owners fun, it is to protect the birds involved.

Whilst I'm glad your new birds get on at the store bare in mind this may not be the case when they are home, on territory and off territory are completely different things. I would leave your bird at home from now on (theres still a risk even though they already met) then follow quarentine procedues once your new one is home, many things you are quarantining for are incurable. Why take the risk? You can introduce Lago to the new bird after a month in an unfamiliar room if you wish them to get used to each other away from Lagos territory.

Good luck with your new baby. 2-3 weeks + another 4 isn't really that long to wait to introduce them again when they live such a long time.

Pom - I am so happy for you and the babies but they are all right about the quarentine.

That said - I did the same thing. I was so happy to get Myrtle that I put her in the middle of everthing to bring her out of her situation. I was just plain lucky that she didn't bring in a germ or bacteria. It could have killed my whole flock and even the furries. This is the first time I told the forum that I had an attack of the stupids and did everything wrong.

Then too - I quarentined a baby gecko for a month before I let him near the others. A month after that he died and the other three followed. I lost them all. I really cried over that. They were not just critters. They all knew their names and came to me when I called. Even when the cat crashed through the top of their habitat and they escaped, they came back to me when I called them. Can you tell that I am still sad over what happened and that was 6 years ago.

I definitely agree that Caiques are overlooked. My WBC is definitely not shy- very loving and outgoing, but he was raised in a bird shop with hundreds of other birds and many people touching him- so he didn't have a chance to be shy!

We will be continuing intros once they are home with 2 separate cages side by side. I'm aware of the territory issue and will be taking things slow.

LOL pomlover! XD I personally love your answer to Michael's question...what's done is done and there's no need to rain on someone's parade. A better way to approach the situation would be like "congrats! Just be careful, babies have weaker immune systems and you might want to consider bringing a different bird in next time..." Or something along those lines.

And I love caiques, they're adorable and great little birds. A little nippy, I hear, but still awesome parrots!
