I'm Okay Now

Postby Mona » Tue Oct 02, 2012 1:42 pm

Hi guys:
I have a grouchy old Senegal "Bailey" who can talk, but doesn't very often. Daily, he gets free time in the birdroom with my flock and he likes to follow my grey Kiri around asking her, "What are you doing? What are you doing?" Kiri generally just turns and looks at him but occassionally, she does turn and chases him.
Yesterday, he and Kiri got in a tiff. I could hear him screeching so I ran into the birdroom. Bailey was trying to fly across the floor away from Kiri so I scooped him up and took him in the other room so he could sit on my husband's shoulder. Once on my husband's shoulder, Bailey snuggled up around Doug's collar. I was worried about Bailey and checking him for injuries (beak? Toes?) when Bailey said, quite plainly, enough that both Doug and I looked at each other with our mouth's open, "I'm Okay Now!" and clambored down Doug's shoulder
It was so appropriate and so emotional, it was just wierd. Bailey's been favoring his foot today but otherwise, seems to be okay - but I sure find myself looking at him sidewise ALOT today. He is definitely a Gremlin...Definitely!
Thanks Mona

Aw that sounds so cute. I love hearing a bird speak in context but its a shame it was for that reason.

Those little bird brains know more than they are telling us until they need the words. Now you know that he is able to ask questions and give answers. I just love it when they do.

Rambo has the phrase "you got a problem". Other than hello that is the first thing he said to Myrtle when she kept calling to him with hello. About a week later she was squaking. I asked her "you got a problem?" and her answer was "I don't know". How did she know to refer to herself as I?

When we first got Rambo a strange cat came in the cat door. The only one home was my Aunt Betty. He yelled "Betty help help - c'mere c'mere - hurry hurry". Rambo was on the dining room table with the cat under it. Aunt Betty chased the cat around and around the table with Rambo yelling "catch him - put him out - quick quick" repeatedly. She was so amazed since she had never had contact with a bird.

Rambo is 21 and set in his ways. He only talks when he has something to say and we are always amazed when he comes up with a new one. He was walking around under my daughter's feet when she got anoyed at him and asked "what do you want?". He replied "pick me up". How did he know to use the word me?

Buahahaha, that is hilarious, Mona! So cute!

I agree, Liz, our birds are smarter than people think they are. Just this morning, I sat down to my laptop, and saw Tiki climbing around in her cage. I looked up at her and said, "I love you," to which she responded, "love you" right back.

I just love these feathered beasts. <3
