Starting over with the harness

Postby Tro » Fri Oct 05, 2012 8:14 pm

Wasnt sure where to put this because it isnt really a question, its more Of a story so i guess this would be the right spot for it haha.

I'v been working to get my :gcc: Tak harness trained, it has been very difficult. I can get the harness around his neck and this doesn't phase him at all. He thinks of it as a trick to get a seed but if I try to leave it on for even a couple of seconds he freaks out.
So we have been in this pattern for a while of him putting his head in the harness for a couple weeks then me trying to take things up a notch by making him wear it for a longer duration of time around his neck, then him getting traumatized and refusing to put his head through again for a couple days, and then I only ask for his head to go through until he gets comfortable with that again. Anyways we are in a rut!
So I have decided to start completely from scratch, using the steps Michael listed on this website. The harness has been by his cage for the past week and today I will start doing the trick training with the harness next to us. I intend to take things very slow, about a week or so at each step, because Tak at the moment realllly hates the harness and I want him to start to like it! If anybody has helpfull hints let me know  . I will keep you all updated on his progress, and hopefully things go smoothly from here on out.

Give him lots of praise once you have it around his neck - atta boys, treats, kisses, snuggles, skitches. Anything that will take his mind off of the harness. Then remove. Repeat but don't over do in one session. Once you can fully harness your bird take him outside and soon he will associate the pleasure of the great outdoors with the harness.
