Sad change in our house...

Postby kittyhazelton » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:08 am

When talking about my birds & pets in general, of course we all have a tendancy to bragg about how great they all, on their good points, and why we love them. I myself often tend to overlook my birds "flaws" and accept them for who they are, I love them nomatter what.
Well, here's some background of some of the "not so good" things I've been dealing with my bird Alliah the IRN
I received Alliah about 6yrs ago from someone who didn't know too much about birds. She was kept in a too-small cage with a very aggressive male and fed a seed only diet. At the time, I re-homed the male & kept Alliah because she was at least hand-tame & this was my first bird so I didn't know how to work with the male. She was and still is a very noisy temperamental little bird with trust issues, but I can look past that. Despite the fact that she never really seemed to "bond" with me, we had a mutual acceptance of each others presence. She is one of those "only on her terms" birds who doesn't like being pet, but would hang out on your shoulder.
As life tends to flow, I had moved a few times, changed relationships. etc.
Well, over the last two years my current relationship blossomed and things were going well; except for the fact that my boyfriend works late evenings/nights & needs to sleep in. Alliah's morning and mid-day screeching became a problem for him & he tried to ignore it. We tried changing Alliah's cage, location, offering alternative activities, more toys, moving her to different parts of the house during times of day, trying her with another IRN etc. Consulted a local parrot rescue person who gave us many great ideas to try to curb the noise but Alliah was just perfectly content to make noise for her own joy for long periods of time throughout the day. This had been going on for the entire two years, with many arguments between my boyfriend and I on what to do.
We recently moved to a new house a few months ago... a slightly smaller house, with wood floors and low cielings; needless to say the noise echos--- A LOT. After passing the "settle in" period, the attempts at curbing noise started again, same story same results - no change, even with headphones on her peircing calls were disturbing my boyfriend.
Sadly, my boyfriend and I had reached a decision, he cannot work nights with Alliah in the house; after unsuccessfully trying to switch to a day shift I had to make the tough decision to place her in a new home.
I placed Alliah with a close friend & she is doing well. My friend fortunately has a separate "bird room" & currently has a B&G who is also loud, so she doesn't mind the noise. Alliah's attitude hasn't changed, but at least she somewhere that her volume is not an issue.

I'm so sorry it worked out that way but at least you can say that you tried your best and didnt give up. Another plus on a bad situation is you know exactly who the she is with, so have ensured her a good home, and can get updates on her too.

Thank you for sharing your own experience and the struggle you endured, and ultimately the very hard decision you had to make.

It can be viewed as a sad decision, but you made a decision that was the best outcome for you and your partner. I'm glad to know you have a friend who is taking care of Alliah; that she is in a safe place, and that you can visit her, too.

I'm so sorry it ended up working out that way, marie83. It must've been extremely painful for you to have to give up a pet that you loved so much. Here's hoping that you might be able to get another bird that doesn't make the kind of super-loud noise that your other bird did, and that would be more tolerable for your boyfriend. All the best of luck to you. Keep us all posted on what happens.

Kitty, I'm sorry that it worked out that way. It's always painful to lose a beloved pet, whether it be by a death, or having to give it away for whatever reason(s). Here's hoping that you'll eventually be able to replace your beloved Sun Conure in the near future. All the best of luck to you! Keep us posted on what happens, okay?

i have a ringneck and i understand how loud they can be, my bird is about the same age as yours is/was i rehomed her from my friend because i did not want her to be sold to someone who might not feed her well.

her screeching set off my friends mustle spasms (he is disabled like me ) i dont mind her screeching because i am so accustomed to it and also because she mainy tends to do it at specific times of day but then i only have one bird so maybe she is quieter than your bird was?

She is generally quieter outsidee her cage than in it apart from the od contact call so i am lucky i can imagine how difficult for you it must have been to rehome her. At least you know she'l be safe with your friend.
