New Senegal owner

Postby Hammcd » Sun Feb 24, 2013 10:38 am

Hey guys... I thought i would introduce myself. My name is Craig and I have recently adopted a 5 year old Senegal named Brightsides from a parrot rescue near Atlanta. Yes I'll probably change the name.. My girlfriend has a cockatoo and 2 society finches so we have a house full of birds... I wanted to say hi and I hope to be able to get to know everyone in the future

Welcome to the forums!

I recently had my first encounter with a sengal parrot and she was delightful. But then again I have et to come across a parrot that I don't find delightful in some way!

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your Senegal! That is so awesome you adopted an adult bird from a rescue!

I think Brightsides is a nice name for a Senegal, but that's just my two cents.

Thanks for posting the pictures, she is a beautiful bird and she looks so sweet in the one where you are petting her. I can't believe she will lie on her back in your hand, that's great! She seems to be a very tame bird for a rescue!

She was very snippy for the first 2 days but whenever she tried to bite I just kinda held her beak and showed her I wasn't intimidated. On the third day She started letting me do whatever i want to her. I can pull her wings out, lay her on her back, turn her upside down, etc. She then began mating behavior which I nipped in the bud. She attacks my girlfriend occasionally but she has been holding her beak too. This seems to be the show stopper for Basil as now my girlfriend can get her to step up and pet her head as well.
She was in the rescue for 3 years. I'm not sure how much time was spent with her individually though.
Originally she was brought in from a 10 yr old boy who's parents were divorcing and the mom wouldn't let him keep the bird.

And yes we thought Basil might be a good new name but we haven't thrown out Brightsides completely yet. :)

Basil suits him well :)
Poor bird being in the rescue for 3 whole years. Do you know why it took so long to rehome basil?

From what I understand, the owner of the rescue told the boy that had to surrender her that the rescue would be Brightsides home (yes we are thinking of changing her name back to Brightsides because every time I tried to call her Basil I kept saying Brightsides accidentally)and if he decided to come back and get her he could. So sent him updates and pictures for 2 and a half years without response. She recently she thought maybe a new "forever home" would be good for her. I think she was only put up for adoption a few months ago.

welcome to the forum :)

Brightsides/Basil (both sound nice, but I'm leaning to Basil because of her green chest, so lovely in the last photo) is very lucky to have found a home with you and your family. The rescue seems to have done a fantastic job keeping her socialized during the intervening years.

Beautiful bird, and so sweet! Looking forward to hearing more about her on the forum :senegal:
