Hola from Costa Rica

Postby jimmyncr » Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:17 am

Im new and wanted to introduce myself. Retired gringo living in Costa Rica. I keep 2 Amazons yellow naped and red Lored. Then red Lored came for the clouds. My wife was walked home after mass and the lored flew down and landed on the sholder of my wife. Tried to find the owner but was un successful. My question is about food. We dont have access to granulated foor like in the states and was wondering if you give the bird a good mixture of fruits, grains, and vegtables, is this ok or I need to mail order parrot food from the internet in US. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the forums.

I assume by granulated foor you mean pellets? It is better to get hold of pellets if you can, even if it means getting it shipped in bulk from another country and freezing it to make it last longer, as parrot nutrition is very complex. Even the experts don't know that much about it but they know alot more than people do.

If not you can give a diet similar to what you describe already. If i couldn't access pellets i would feed seed, vegetables, sprouted seeds, sprouted pulses, fruits, nuts and healthy human foods as treats, I would decrease the amounts fed as I went down the list so nuts would be a very very tiny amound with the seed being the highest amount per day. Other people have different ideas as to what should be fed, look into amazon diets as thoroughly as you can, that is just an example of what I would do until I had gained more information.

May I ask if you have a certified avian vet, a vet who is experienced with birds or a general vet?

Why why why are parts of other peoples posts still coming back to haunt us randomly? I'm sure I wrote this.
