My bird has been pecking , not out of agression,

Postby angel198225ilb » Wed Feb 27, 2013 12:22 am

:cockatoo: I have a lesser sulpher crested cockatoo, that I recently bought from a pet store, When I bought her, I thought she was 13, I researched her tag, and came to the conclusion she is 17, We let her name herself , one day, I asked her what she would like her name to be and named off a list, when I mentioned "Honey" she turned her head at 180 and nodded yes, :D ....She began to be a one person bird, but I am patiently beginning to turn that cycle around, Lately she has been pecking at my husbands hand, she's not trying to hurt him almost looks like she's playing , any one seen this or know why it's happening???? :cockatoo: :cockatoo: :cockatoo: :cockatoo:

Lots of reasons why it could be happening, a likely one is just for the fun of it. It's important not to react to or encourage this type of behavior. Socializing the parrot to MANY different people outside the household also helps make the parrot better behaved for those people in the household.

:cockatoo: :cockatoo: We often have friends or family come over , she has taken to my husband, in the store she was friendly with everyone , she let me pet her , she bowed down and let us pet her , and let me pick her up, now the only time she lets me hold her is when my husband walks out of the room and she wants me to be her taxi , for a free ride to him.....lol, kinda frustrating because I am the one that bought the bird, but it is hard to spend more time with her than him, because I work and he stays home.......I am not a person who gives up easily, but any tips or pointers would help a great deal, also if my husband walks out of the room she honks loudly like a goose.....lol

i read somewhere that cockatiels will peck on a surface to show that it is theirs. maybe your too is doing the same to your husbands hand? just my two cents. good luck!
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Welcome to the forums. My 'tiels all did the pecking thing in the way the others have said. Not sure if 'toos do it as well. none of the other species I have had do it though. The conures tend to strut around stuff. The budgie and rosella wasn't really bothered.
