New Green Cheek Conure Owner

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Tue Jan 26, 2010 4:27 pm

Hi,

My husband is a very experienced bird owner, but we just brought home MY first feathered friend. We'd been talking about getting a bird for years, specifically a green-cheeked conure, but he's been traveling a lot so we hadn't located a breeder yet. Long story short, we did what even I know was probably the wrong thing to do, but we "rescued" a 10-month old bird who had been marooned at the local pet store since the summer. My husband called me up one day and just said, "I can't leave him there anymore!". So now he's home with us. And I'm totally infatuated with him, he's a serious character!

He seems to be a pretty well adjusted bird. We've had him home for two days and he's eating well, loves to come out of the cage and interact. He doesn't have a permanent name yet. The one they called him at the store doesn't seem to fit and we don't think he knows it. We've nicknamed him "Scooter" or "Little Scooter" after my husband's late yellow-naped Amazon. He does seem to have a bit of a tendency to bite, but he basically seems like a well behaved and happy bird.

We also have 3 cats and a horse.

The horse is boarded so it may be a while before scooterbird meets Smint. I will let you know how that goes!

I like the cage, too! Scooterbird, on the other hand, would appear to want to spend all his time on a human.

Green Cheeks are little parrots with great, BIG hearts! Congratulations on your new best friend:) My GC, Lilo is 8 y/o, busy little guy, so I keep him occupied with lots of stuff to play with. He's not the least intimidated by my Cockatoos, so I have to keep a weather eye on him should he decide to push the big guys. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!

Someone I know from another forum I frequent has a blog: http://cagefreeparrot.blogspot.com/

She has a birdroom, and her amazon is cagefree. It's very fascinating.

While I don't think a bird should have free reign of an entire house, the idea of a bird room, where the birds can live cage free is appealing to me.

I would love to have a special room like Robin has, and allow my two to have full access to it. Then, when ready to spend time with the birds, go in and visit them, or bring them out into the main areas of the house
