Newbie - two green cheek conures

Postby KeroRocks » Sun Mar 03, 2013 9:32 am

Hi all,
I am a new green cheek owner. I have a DNA sexed boy named Sheldon. He's three months old. And I have a Yellow sided green cheek named Cooper. He's a little over a year old. I just got Cooper yesterday.
Both birds have their own cages on opposite sites of my living room. I want to introduce them slowly.

My only worry is Cooper's previous owner said that he doesn't fly. This morning something started him and he fluttered to the ground. He isn't clipped but can't fly. That just doesn't seem right. He also only eats pellets. I've put different options in his cage. I feed my other bird a wide variety of fruits, nuts and veggies. He seems kind of small so I'm hoping that I can get him to eat other foods.

Welcome. :-)

I also have a GCC (who will be 7 in a few weeks). Others on the forums have GCCs as well so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. :gcc:

If you just got Cooper you should quarantine him for a month before introducing him to Sheldon as birds that are sick sometimes don't show signs immediately and a quarantine gives you time to monitor a new bird for illness.

If Cooper is only fluttering it could just be that the muscles involved in flight are weak or atrophied from disuse. You can refledge him by encouraging him to fly very short distances using positive reinforcement and over time he will re-build his muscles and be able to fly again.

How to get clipped parrot to start flying again

It's good that Cooper is eating pellets; they should make up the majority of the diet, anyway. Just keep offering fruits and nuts (in very small amounts) and veggies and eventually he should eat them.
