I am a brand new bird parent. Six days ago I brought home Lockheed, a six week old green budgie. It has been a fun few days. The first couple he did not do much more than sit on the top perch in his cage. Then he started moving around and playing with his cage toys. Two days ago he started eating in my presence. Then last night I got him to eat some millet from my hand. He tolerates my hand in his cage now and even fluttered down and landed on it.
Things seem to be going well. Before I left for class this morning, I went to replace his food and water. When I uncovered his cage, he gave me an enthusiastic vocal hello and hopped around his cage chirping. He was quite the clown. I am surprised that he has warmed up as quickly as he has. Many of the resources I have referenced say that it can take weeks for a bird to warm up to a new owner. Is it normal for things to progress this quickly. I hope that I am reading his body language correctly and not mistaking fear for enthusiasm. But anyway, this has gone longer than planned.
Best Wishes,
Klint and Lockheed
