Meet Buddy and Dori. There almost a year old. Dori is a Green cheek, Buddy is a Sun. They both step up but only when they want to and normally after a little maneuvering around there cage to avoid me or my wife. They have only been in the house for about a day as of now. 3/11/2013. Was wondering how to get them trained to be very friendly as far a step up cuddling etc. I feel like thats the best place to start. THANKS :sun: :gcc:

Hello! Your parrots are absolutely gorgeous.

Unless I have to I would never force a parrot to step up, so that means don't chase them around trying to get them to step up. Think about it this way: imagine you're the parrot hanging out in your room (your safe place) and some giant hand comes in wanting you to get onto their hand. You probably wouldn't be very excited about leaving your safe place, especially if it starts chasing your around. It's good to start off with some trust building techniques. :]

I suggest following Michael's basic training guide. It really helped me. http://trainedparrot.com/Taming/ My parrot figured out that good things happen when she comes out of the cage and she loves attention so she comes right up to me to step up. She didn't always but she and I had different issues than your parrots and you. Also, not all parrots (very few) will want to cuddle so don't be too hopeful. I've heard green cheeks may cuddle a bit and then decide they're done and inform you of this with a nip.

Thank you!

They both stay on top of there cage and on there perch outside of there cage until its bed time. They also venture inside there cage for food water treats and well to get away from my giant hand lol. I will def take a look at that page. I hope it helps. Trying to find some good treats for them that i all ready have in the house. Recently had surgery so really don't want to leave the house lol.

I feel like my issue is. Is that i let them out of there cage all day? Along with i let them climb out of the cage on there own.? Any thoughts. The biggest issue is the front door is to small for my sun to come out of comfortably.

From what I've heard, it's good to get the acclaimated to the cage, to where they're happy in it, but also happy to leave. This is acheieved, I believe, in a couple ways. First, making sure there is a good amount of time out of the cage, as well as many pleasing toys in the cage, and next by making sure returning the cage when you put it there is rewarding.

Reference if you will, this page:

I've found, particularly GCCs, to be taken with cuddles. I'm sure once they've settled in they will all too anxious to be close to you and your family. I've known GCC's in pet stores for mere minutes before they've wants to press up to my neck or tuck away in my sweater pockets.
