Hi all from UK :)

Postby davo84 » Thu Apr 04, 2013 5:45 am

Hi there!

I am Davide from Italy (and living in London,UK), this week I became a parrot daddy!
Skyler is a lovely blue ringneck, should be around 9 months old, thought to be a male, although not 100% sure, he grew up in aviary, so not tame, but in the last couple of days since we got him he managed to grab nuts from us behind the cage, and also is very calm if I stick my hand inside the cage :)

Hope I will be able to teach him to step up and start clicker training soon!
A picture might arrive soon too!

Oh cool!

I got it from an amateur breeder in Leyton, very cheap (£75) but seemed much better kept than others I have seen.

Here is a picture of him :) I replaced its cage with a good one, but he seems still a bit afraid, dilated pupils, when I try to give him nuts through the cage starts climbing and jumping all around the cage, getting each time closer and biting sometimes my finger some time the nut.
Is that territorial behaviour? Just needs time?maybe because I left him with no food in the afternoon for training?
Thoughts?

Hey

He is handsome! I got 2 lovebirds as a gift couple of days ago. The female I've named her Yelo she is very aggressive and Yedo the male is very naughty and always wants to escape from the cage. I still haven't been really successful in becoming their friend. I know it takes time.
All the best to you.

He's a beautiful bird! I would suggest you slow way down, and spend a week at least just sitting quietly with him next to the cage letting him get used to your presence, talk quietly to him, but a lot of the time just be there. Then start to rest your hand quietly at the door or just inside the cage. Watch his reactions and let him lead you in how far you go. This bird is essentially a wild bird, if you push him now it will take much longer to get where you want to go. I would suggest you hold off on withdrawing food for now. I know that Michael recommends it for training but not for a bird under a year old. As well as that, this move your bird has just been through is hugely stressful for him and being hungry will only stress him further at this point. You'll get to where you want to go, it'll just take a month or two to settle him in

Yeah that's the one I saw advertised! So glad he found a home. Looks like a really pretty bird. There is an excellent avian vet in Leyton that I go to. Midland Vet Surgery- Dr Stenson. He consulted to the parrots aviary at London Zoo and treated all our birds! He's very very good so if you want a new bird check definitely go to him :-)

We live in Bethnal Green so not far at all :-)

We live on Bethnal Green Road! Small world!

Seriously though it's worth the trip to that vets they brilliant. Dr Stenson or Dr Wildgoose. Also they have an emergency room in Wanstead if you ever need anything.
