So our flock consist of Pigwidgeon, a cuddly male parrotlet that we just finished weaning (long story: we were traveling in Arizona and the breeder of our first parrotlet(also in AZ, where we used to live and sometimes helped with feedings and socialization) had babies and wanted us to have him. So we hand fed him from when he had pin feathers. He traveled back with us, while being handfed every few hours, across the United States. He is now a happy cuddly boy. He is my daughters bird. His wings are clipped (first four feathers) only because even with them lightly trimmed he can still fly some. He is so small and with our old house and active children I do not feel it is safe for full flight. Time will tell.
My baby (drum roll). Is a sweet, newly adopted, 9 year old timneh african grey. Sadly, We are her forth home this year. I plan to make this her final home. We brought her home on May Day. She is beautiful, funny, talkative, and already starting to show her desire to be near me. We are planning on keeping her fully flighted. She does well going for short flights and normally back to cage or the room I am in.
I have to say the tips for having her do many "steps ups" that I read from here has already changed our interactions. The previous owner could not get her off her cage due to biting. She told me she would just corner her and grab. Of course that was such a pleasant experience for Mabel, that any time someone came by she fled first. I spent the afternoon talking to her, while driving the four hours home. By the end of the trip I realized she was presenting her head for me to scratch (she was buckled in the passenger seat facing me). I was filled with much hope. So after getting her back in her cage, she again screamed, fled, and reached to bite when I approached. I just stood still and told her to step up. After trial biting and realizing I was going no where, She did. I did that several times a day, adding step ups. Now only five days into our relationship...she steps up the first time for me anyplace!!!!! The suggestions here work. thank you all.
Now on to getting proper food...her previous owner fed her cockatiel mix from Walmart and Doritos, and sloppy jos. Blah! I had brought parrot nutriberries with me...she-immediately loved currently that is what she is eating. She is also enjoying kale, carrots, berries, bananas, apples, and other veggies too. I am planning to switch to roudy bush, I think....hmm..
Enough for now. Have a great day everyone!
Stephanie et all.
