Cosmo! What species exactly is he?

Postby jelibat » Sat Jun 08, 2013 11:13 pm

So I just got Cosmo, he's supposedly about a year old and his owners did not have the time for him anymore.
He seems pretty friendly asides from a bit of biting that he does, which is not hard enough to draw blood.

I'm not exactly sure what species he is. I was thinking Amazon parrot.

He doesn't appear to be eating much, but it could be because he just moved environment or because he does not like the food. He takes the food if i hand feed him. (The owners gave me his left over food so it's not a different diet)

Buying him was sort of a splurge and well I'm looking up as much information as i can for his nutrition. I already adore the bird. He's still wary of people touching him, but he seems to be letting me scratch his head. And he prefers his cage door open or he gets angry..he definitely doesn't like being left alone. He was in his cage and then flew to us. It's adorable!

I guess this is a super long intro, but hello all! I can't wait to learn more about these wonderful birds!

Not an Amazon parrot :) He's some kind of an Aratinga conure, just not sure what exact species from the Aratinga genus.
Maybe a Mitred conure or a Finsch's conure? Just guessing, I have no idea

I think he's a Cape parrot, which is a type of Poicephalus. I might be wrong. He's lovely! Welcome to the forum, you'll fine lots of good information here.

Thank you both for the help! I'm now thinking he might be a gold cap conure..He has less coloring than what the google images show. He's pretty green except the inside of his wings are golden and orange hues.

And thank for the welcome!

Huh...the Golden Capped Conures I've found pictures of or clips on YouTube all have more colouring on the head and on the chest than it looks like your bird has. It can be hard to tell from photos though.

Can't say with certainty from the picture alone but I can for sure tell you it is not an Amazon, Cape Parrot, or Gold Capped Conure. Most likely it is of the genus Psittacara. It may be a juvenile Mitred Conure (which would explain the lack of red). If you know the bird is young, that's my best guess. But it could be another species from that genus.
