hello, i am new here

:senegal:
i just adopted a male (pretty sure, but not DNAd) senegal parrot. he is roughly 2 years old, and was hand fed. he is not too tame right now. his human parent had to go out of the country for 4 months and could not take him. when she returned, he would have nothing to do with her. i have been keeping him pretty secluded in my bedroom where it's quiet, because i am sure that he's frightened by all of the change. he will only step up if he's out of the cage and wants transportation back to it. he's mildly cage aggressive, but not a real biter. he will accept bits of food and treats from my hand. he does NOT like to be too close, so when i hold him, it's arm's length, otherwise he will fly off my arm and squak. he has flight ability now, and i am reluctant to clip him until he feels a little secure. he watches me from his cage, and when i leave the room, he calls me. he has been on a sunflower seed diet, so i have him on harrison's pellets, lefbetter's pellets, some of his old food, and kale, fruits and some salt free nuts. he mostly wants to eat WITH me. so, i try to find things to eat that are good for him, and eat by his cage, and share. any ideas to help tame him? i am of the belief that it will take some time, so i am trying to not force anything...any help will be appreciated.

sounds like you're doing everything right so far but please don't clip your :senegal: flight is so much better for birds it's what they are made to do. eating with him is the best way to bond as long as you keep toxic foods from what you're sharing garlic, mushrooms, avocado, onions and chocolate.

Sounds like you are being awesome and preparing him for a much happier life. The diet change seemed super necessary as well.

Do you have any other animals in the house that he may be afraid of? Or very loud people? Otherwise it may be okay to keep him in a common area where he can feel like part of the family and observe everybody. It might make him more comfortable to feel like part of a "flock." It depends on your situation though!

Best of luck to you two!!!
