Hi Summer and Emily, best of luck to both of you with your new birds. I've been a bird lover/owner for over 10 years and learn something new every single day. It sounds like you both have great ideas about your birds and will make wonderful, loving bird parents.
One of the things I'm continually amazed by is how different each bird personality is. I'm sure quite a bit of it comes from parenting, but I've noticed distinct characteristics with different breeds too. I think the two most valuable bits of general advice I was given were: spend as much time as you possibly can with your bird, and do lots of research on their diet and feed them the best possible diet with LOTS of variety and fresh food. I feed mine a combination of pellets (Roudybush), cooked fresh foods including grains, veggies and fruits, dried fruit for treats and bottled artesian water because our Denver tap water has trace amounts of giardia that do not affect larger animals or people, but could affect very small creatures like birds. Be very sure you find a good avian vet, too - if anything happens to your birds, you won't have time to do your research then.
Try to find and read the "Parrot's Bill of Rights" on the internet. It may bring a tear to your eye but I think it's something every bird parent should read and live by. I've had five birds who were re-homed (this is for you especially Summer) and it is very rewarding, but these birds come with baggage. You'll need some extra patience, but you will get a very, very special reward the day your bird decides to bestow their love and trust on you.
My very best to you both! From Mandy, Jasper
