I really need your help

Postby Rosebud2860 » Sun Jul 07, 2013 11:39 pm

I am new to the forum and a very desperate parrot mom.
I have two parrots; one is a senegal that I have had for 23 years, his name is Pete. He is a little moody at times, but I can't imagine not having him in my life. Life is really on his terms, so we understand each other, as to not have too many band aids on my fingers etc. :)
My second parrot is a mini macaw AKA Hahns Macaw...his name is Oliver. Without going into too many horribly painful details, he was swept away in the wind 4 months ago. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me.
The good news is that I know where he is....he has found a safe place, and calls and screams and makes all kinds of noise...but only when I'm not there. I call his name, I come out every morning and evening and as much as I can during the day. I cry. Cry. Cry. I miss him so much and of course, if one goes missing, I know whose fault it is, it's mine. 17 years I have had him, and never ever have experienced this or thought I ever would.
I would like some good tips on how he may respond to me. I have been told calling his name seems aggressive to him, so I stopped and he's quiet now, I call his name and he's silent. He seems to make noise when I leave and I'm bewildered.
I am open to anything that any of you can advise on how to get my baby home. Please no lectures on losing him, I've beat myself up enough. I thought I had protected him, and I failed him. I know this.
He has stayed in a safe area nestled between several homes on the river; and is getting good food and fresh water every day. He is sooo green and so much foliage in the area, I cannot see him, but others have and have heard him. Please, if anyone has any good tips, I will do anything to get him home.
Thank you so much...I need all the help I can get. I don't eat, sleep...I have nightmares, depression. It's so bad, and every day I come home without him is a day that I failed him again.
This is how I feel. I appreciate any and all suggestions....thank you again.
He didn't fly away from me, he panicked and was swept away in the wind.

Take away the food given to him before sunset and leave nothing for him to eat. Then, the following morning, go to the place where he is VERY early in the morning (I am talking when the sky is beginning to get light, way before sunrise) and put his cage where he can see it from the sky and under the spot where he is - leave the door open and put a perch right outside the door so he can alight there before going in- and put a white paper plate with his favorite food (I assume it will be seeds or nuts) on the bottom of the cage and another one on top of it and sit a few feet away from it while softly calling to him -if you have a special phrase you say to them while feeding them, use it. I repeat a singsong to them every time I give them seeds precisely for something like this happening...

I agree with Pajarita, if there's a certain food that he loves more than anything, make sure he misses it, then place it in his cage and place the cage somewhere he can see it. If he's anything like my Frankie, he'll give up anything for a big beautiful peanut.

Most importantly, don't lose hope and stop being so hard on yourself. Accidents happen, and as long as he's safe, no need to be so depressed or scared. My Cookie flew away 7 years ago, and calling his name didn't help. I found him by whistling. Whenever I imitated his whistling, he replied. The sound led me to him. He tried flying away when i tried picking him up, so i pretended to casually scratch his little head and when he bowed i grabbed him as fast as I could...
I hope you find your baby... But please, be strong and stop blaming yourself. You took good care of him for so many years, you're obviously a great mom. And if he's managing, keep trying but stop worrying, be happy that he's happy!

It could be that he is quiet when you around his hiding place because he feels safer with you around. If he is calling and making noises when you aren't there it may be because he is wanting you to know where he is. Have you ever been able to actually SEE him in his hiding place, or just the general area he probably is? Will he call back to others besides you? If he does, perhaps you could get a friend to call his name and get him making noise so you could figure out his exact location. Then maybe lure him down with his favorite treats and the sight of his favorite toy or cage.

Also, if he was never flight trained, it may be that he wants to come back but can't control his flight well enough to feel confident that he can fly back to you. Descending is the hardest because going down and landing requires more precision than ascending or straight flights - so don't get discouraged or feel that he is avoiding you because he doesn't like you anymore.
