New and unexpected bird lover

Postby lights106 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 10:34 pm

Ok I've always know I love birds, I just never thought I would own one. My sister adopted a green cheek conure about 3 weeks ago from a pet store. On Friday she admitted that she doesn't have the time for him since he was never held and needs more training than if one was hand raised. So the bird came to me since from day one he would let me hold him with very little bitting and even let me pet him.
After a bit of research I found that he is a yellow sided! He loooves means I've come to love him. He has already mostly of the time step up, five kisses on the nose, and often times will come when I call him. I've named him Awnrey (but pronounced as the French pronounce Henry). But he is an Awnrey bird. I work part time so he gets plenty time to himself but I work with him off and on at night for several hours. He just seems to be a mellow bird. He doesn't play to much. When I'm home he mostly wants to be held, but after a few minutes gets grumpy because I don't put him on my shoulder like he wants. So I have to pt him Dow. While he resets and starts all over again. Will he eventually get more playful?

He might play if you did not take him out at night. Birds in the wild have their own schedules set by nature: they wake up with sunrise, they eat and drink, sometimes they bathe, then they interact until the middle of the day when they rest, they interact and chill again and, when the sun is low on the horizon they go foraging for dinner, eat, go back to roost and, as night falls they go to sleep. This tells us that the best time to interact with them is after breakfast and before dinner (not after). Besides, if you keep him up with artificial light, he will produce sexual hormones all year round and, most likely, become a screamer (and they have a very shrill and monotonous call that seems to go on and on), a biter and/or a plucker.

HEY!

Welcome to the site and I hope you find everything here that you are looking for. It sounds like your :gcc: chose you, which is so sweet. I guess it was meant to be! I would say take the training slow and read as much about parrot behavior, training parrots, and conures that you can and ENJOY!

Thank you! By night I mean 3:30-9 pm. I put my son to bed at 9 and that's Awnry's "bed time" too.
