Thanks a lot for that info. Much appreciated. Will do accordingly.

Seeds don't need to be cooked but you can sprout them too in a moist kitchen towel, glass jar and muslin cloth

Hi,

As per your advise, I gave my birds a seed mix consisting of Green Gram, Red Lentil, Green Peas and Maize (soaked in boiled water overnight), but they are not even touching Green Gram and Green Peas, but very fond of maize and to an extent, the red lentils. Is there a way to make them eat all the seeds that we give? And Is there a reason why they reject certain seeds?

Thanks.

Yes of course there is. If you put cake on one plate and some vegetables on another for a child what would the child eat... the cake!

This is exactly what birds do with seeds, which is why its better to feed vegetables and soaking mix and all fresh food separately from the seeds. Otherwise they will just pick out what they want and leave the rest.

You need to introduce fresh foods slowly and go trhough a priod of transition, which sometimes means removing the seeds for an amount of time so they will try it. This is easier when the birds are tame but can still be achieved wth breeding and non tame birds.

If you write a post in Health and Diet you will be able to get further advice on how to achieve this.

Namaste Deepak,

Yes, I agree with Rebecca. It is much better to serve the vegetables and soaking mix separately. I found that Ladu (my Cockatiel) always preferred vegetables from my hand as a treat when training him. Maybe if you tame your lovebirds you could try this if nothing else works.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Namasthe to you too. BTW Ladu sounds Indian to me :) Ladu or Ladoo is an Indian sweet :) Thanks for your response and tips. Right now my birds are eagerly waiting for me to get some treats (I give sunflower seeds as treats) for them, but they are still wary of my hand getting closer to them. But they are quite comfortable now to eat right out of my hands. I think it will take some time to get them sit on my fingers.

Regards,
Deepak.

Re: Drinking Water Bowl and Bathing Bowl

Postby deepakeapen » Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:18 pm

Hello friends,

How do African Lovebirds differentiate between the water bowl kept for drinking and the one for bathing. My birds bathe in the bowl kept for drinking. Is that OK?

Thanks.
