When you say 'parakeets', do you mean budgies? If so, yes, there is a way of visually sexing them but you have to wait until they are sexually mature: it's the color of the cere (little fleshy moustache that surrounds the nares -nostrils) that differentiates the gender: males will have a lilac or blue cere while the hens will have a light pink or flesh-colored one -well, except for the inos (albino, lutino) where males could have the same light cere of the females BUT, when they go into breeding condition, the hens' will darken, becoming brown and 'crusty' while the males' will not change.

Parakeets are collective term for budgies, cockatiels, about 50 grass variety parakeets. Each bird is different so you need to say which type of parakeet or we can't tell. Sounds like a kakariki to me and in that case DNA only. Or pelvic exam but that's pretty antiquated and only about 40% effective anyway.

Without knowing the species we can't really say for sure. Perhaps you could upload a picture or perhaps show us on a google link what the birds look like...

I don't know if he means a kakariki... he says different colors in the body but the RedCrowns have a green body.
