Meet Bobble!

Postby theencode » Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:47 pm

Hello.
I'm Rob. My wife and I just picked up our 4m/o Green :irn: today. We have been looking for a bird for a few months and decided on the IRN due to size, talking ability, cost, lifespan, and general awesomeness of the species.
We have both had birds before but that was many years ago. We have a 6y/o daughter who is very excited to have Bobble here. This will be a learning process for all 4 of us. I have been sneaking around this forum and a few others for a while now only recently registering.
Bobble hatched in May, was hand fed and weaned. He loves being around people. He is biting, but its his first day here. So far he has been very quiet but i know that will change. It is just going to take some time to adjust to his new surroundings. We don't want to reinforce the biting so we are either ignoring it showing that his behavior will not make my hand leave, we also reward him for not biting. So far he has been very territorial about his cage. The breeder said he doesn't like hands in his cage so this is something that will have to change, any suggestions?

Anyway that's the 4 of us, 3 people and Bobble. We are looking forward to this new adventure we are embarking on together.

Bobble is gorgeous. I think ringnecks can get quite territorial by nature so may never really tolerate hands in the cage. when he has settled in and your training him you can teach him to come out on to a perch at the front of the cage, step him up and put him elsewhere so you can get on with cleaning duties. In time you might be able to train him to tolerate hands in the cage like Michael has done but that's a job for later.
Be careful with your daughter too, you'll need to explain how the bird might feel very carefully and probably not allow her to handle him until he is trained and well socialised If your daughter was to get bitten at her age she wont understand and it might cause a lot more problems.

Yes, be careful with your daughter handling the bird. IRNs are not the easiest birds to keep tame and they tend to be quite nippy when not handled very often or inappropriately...
