Rehomed Caccatiel

Postby bethie636 » Wed Aug 28, 2013 5:47 pm

I am a new parront with a wonderful 5 1/2 month old GCC Pineapple.... My neiborhs have a 7 year old male caccatiel that bites and have never been tame.... they want me to take him... being a new parront I am not sure about this.... I don't want to spoil the relationship with Tiki.... although I know any parrot at any age can be turned around.... I feel like I should "rescue" this poor boy.... I am not sure though.... I could use some advise.... I did tell them that I would consider it and if not there is a good parrot rescue in St. Louis, but I think that the poor boy deserves a chance. I dont want a bird that is just locked in his cage for life (must be why he is soo mean) I would be willing to try but I don't have the knowlage but am willing to learn.... Would YOU take a problem child when you are new to parront hood????.. Not to mention I am building my bond with Tiki... He is very snuggly and loves to lay in my hands upside down to play..... I don't know what to do, they are moving and can't keep him and are even thinking of just "letting him go"... that is too cruel for me to fathom... GCC MOM...

I wouldn't. But if you're ready to work 3x harder and it's a bird that you want, go for it. Keep them separate for as long as possible both for quarantine and to build an individual relationship with each and not allow this to interfere. You gotta work not 2x but 3x harder because you gotta do everything you do with 1 bird but twice but then you also need to work on educating yourself to taming/training to ensure success with each. So it really depends if it's a challenge you are up for.

Thank You Michael, I don't think I could be up to the task just yet. I don't have the know how to make it work. I will look into contacting the Parrot Rescue here in StL... I just don't want the bird set free to die. I am working with TIKI though, we have your book and target stick and clicker.
I want to say thank you for taking the time to help me out on this one. As usual you have great advise... Beth
