Hello and Breeders who Clip Help Please

Postby Calthesa » Sun Sep 08, 2013 4:38 pm

Hello everyone,

My name is Cal and I'm going to be adding a new parrot to the family. I previously owned birds who have all sadly passed away. I wasn't able to get another bird before because of life being too chaotic for a few years, but now I am finally able to get that coveted Green Cheek Conure. I may or may not end up adopting a conure because they do occasionally show up in the shelters around here, but I would like to find a good breeder just to cover all my options.

With that little introduction out of the way, here's my question:
Does anybody know of a breeder who is willing to sell flighted parrots? Preferably one who lives in Florida and breeds Pyrrhura conures, but honestly, anyone from anywhere would be appreciated. It is important enough to me that my parrot never be clipped, that I would certainly be willing in the case of buying from a breeder to switch species since I wouldn't know the personality of my new baby regardless.

I thought I'd mention that I have already been looking into breeders and of the tens of breeders here in Florida I have contacted, every single one either simply always has and always will clip or out right tells me I'm a terrible person for wanting a flighted bird. It is very sad and very frustrating how little breeders around here seem to care about the birds' or the customers' happiness. Mini-rant over.

Thank you and I look forward to getting lots of advice while I'm here. :gcc: :redbelly:

I can't offer any advice but stand by what you believe in even if it means being extraordinarily patient to get a flighted bird. Personally I would avoid breeders at all costs these days although I did get Ollie from a breeder I've learned a lot since then. Why don't you go round the shelters and see if there are any other birds that catch you eye, all individuals of a species are unique and you might find a bird you want even more.

I am with Marie 100%. I trust breeders only as far as I can throw them because, after all, they are selling a 'product'. I don't believe for one second they love birds because, if they did, they would not sell the babies, they would give them away only to very good homes.

And the proof is in the pudding - anybody who still believes that clipping is good for the bird doesn't know diddly squat about birds!
