Howdy! Name's Markayla, but Marky is the preferred nickname.
Thought I would post a quick introduction.
I do not currently own any birds, however I have been planning and researching parrots and individual parrot species for about a year now. I am homebound due to a chronic disease, which means that I stay at home almost constantly. I am relatively healthy, despite that, and have the energy and physical capability to do chores around the house, etc... so no worries about being unable to take care of a bird. This is to say, however, that I spend tons of time at home and have plenty of free time— most of which I have no idea what to do with. I have recently enrolled in college courses, but I am taking distance education classes and I only do two at a time to keep stress levels under check, so that doesn't impede my schedule too much. I do realize that my situation may not always be the same. However, I have put much thought and consideration into my future and how that would effect my parrot, and do not see myself in a situation where I could not properly care for him / her.
I have had some, though minimal, experience with birds in the past. Growing up my family owned a couple of budgies, who were an absolute joy. I was fairly young at the time, but had an important role in maintaining their cage and helping hand-tame them, etc. I have always loved birds and they have become an increasingly large part of my life. One of my lifetime dreams is to build and maintain a backyard aviary, although at the time being this is nothing more than a fantasy. No matter how hard the times birds have been able to brighten my day and put a smile on my face. We have many morning doves here where I live, and I spend a lot of time watching them outside. Parrots are any entirely different matter altogether. My friends joke that I'm the "can't hug every cat" lady of parrots, because I get so excited and worked up about birds. I imagine my family does not find that quite so endearing, as I constantly regurgitate facts about parrots and other birds around them. It's not a complete meal with me until I've showed you a youtube video or rambled about some amusing aspect of birdie behavior.
I'm currently on the wait list for Rainbow Parrot's GCC babies, as the breeder passed all my "tests" as far as how they raise their babies goes, and overall just enchanted me with the all the love she gives them. Despite myself, I still coo and fawn and whine over every GCC rehome add I see, but have not been satisfied with any of the answers their current owners gave to my question. As much as I would love to adopt / rehome, I've read a lot on the subject and I just don't think it's right for me at this point in time, though perhaps in the future if I decide to expand my flock. What's that saying? Birds are like potato chips, you can't stop at one!
I've read lots of threads here on the parrot forum, and can't wait to be a part of y'alls community.
