Hello New Parrot Owner

Postby Kayleigh89 » Thu Sep 12, 2013 12:46 pm

Hi :) For a few months I had been researching what species of bird to get. I missed the morning chatter and companionship my childhood parakeet had. I have a fear of large birds, Macaws, Cockatoos, etc. so I was looking at something smaller and I had been dead set on a parrotlet. My husband (who was a pet store manager for years) continuously suggested I get a larger bird, like a conure or lori because we have a cat (who is now known to be far more interested in the possible food the bird drops than the actual bird) and because he thought I would enjoy it. Long story short, while looking at cages for a parrotlet, he convinced me at least look at the larger birds in the store we were at. A local store, not a chain. Thus, I fell in love with a 4 month old, hand-fed Senegal Parrot named Bixlow. He (for now, until I get a DNA test) is super cuddly, quiet, and loves to be out and held. I have spent the last 2 days researching all I can about senegal's, and it led me here. :)

Cool, Senegals are awesome! They live forever and are extremly intelligent. Good luck with him! And I agree with your husband, larger birds are way more fun! I like medium sized birds though too; I have a 4 month old handfed quaker parrot that I got last weekend and he is very very nice and affectionate like your bird :)

Enjoy him and have fun!

Thank you. :) Quakers are really cute looking. Earlier today while I was petting my cat, Bixlow came from his cage to where I was sitting and chased the cat away. I'm not sure if this is good thing or not? I don't want Bixlow to get territorial or aggressive when I pay attention to other people or animals, though I also want the cat to fear the bird so he stays away.

Welcome to the forums. I just had to say that I noticed that we all live in NC and that our signatures are alike. xD Senegals are pretty cool birds, however they're not my type- I am a little nervous about that large beak of theirs.

Oh my goodness you're right, lol. I hadn't noticed those two things. I understand the big beak fear, I am afraid of large birds. The senegal is a nice bird to ease myself into conquering that fear, though I am not sure I will ever be comfortable around large macaws and some species of cockatoo.
