New Lovebird Mama... Happy to be here!

Postby archiesmom » Fri Sep 13, 2013 3:38 pm

Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum for several months, and have found it so helpful in my adventures as a new Lovebird mama. In April I brought home Archie, an adorable six month old peachfaced lovebird. He bonded with me right away, and we were inseperable until a few weeks ago, when he passed away suddenly. There was no sign of illness, and he was a very happy bird. I have lost pets before - pets I had for years - but this loss was the hardest. I was heartbroken. My boyfriend and I had a very hard time with it, and still can't believe Archie is gone.(He gave Archie a very nice burial in our back garden, with a handmade cross on his grave. It's adorable.)
Right away we started looking for another bird, as seeing Archie's empty cage was killing us.

Soon after, we brought home two lovebirds, 2 months old bonded siblings, Abbi and Louie. I know the bond will never be the same as I had with Archie, but we are having so much fun watching these two together! They are also young enough, that I believe spending time with them outside of their cage will make them friendly little birds. Louie is very curious of me, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is sitting on my shoulder before too long. He is very brave, and likes to land close to me to see what I'm up to. I had a lot of time to spend with Archie over the summer, but will be returning to work full-time soon, so I am relieved my birds will have each other as company while I'm away all day.

I joined this forum when I had Archie (hence my username) and have decided it's a good time to join in the discussions, and ask a few questions of my own. I look forward to "meeting" all of you soon!

I hope you had a necropsy done on your bird not only to ensure he had no contagious diseases which the new ones might catch but also because you need to find out if it was something environmental.

You are handfeeding them, aren't you? I don't breed them but I once took in a lovie pair with a nest with eggs that hatched and the babies did not come out of the nest until they were three months old.
