Hi, new senegal parrot owner

Postby charlotte&mango » Sat Sep 14, 2013 10:47 am

Hi!
My name is Charlotte and I'm a first year vet student. Today I picked up my 21st birthday present / congrats for getting into vet school - my baby senegal parrot, Mango. Going off her looks I was told she is probably a girl. She was hatched on 20/06/2013 and has been hand reared. She is a P. s. mesotypus (apparently) i.e. she has an orange vest rather than the more common yellow vest. I dont really know anything about keeping birds, I've always had dogs and rabbits as pets before (and still do). So I'm going to be learning as I go along, although I've already done some research on basic care. The only thing I can say so far (having only had her now for about 5 hours) is that she's very bitey when touched, but quite happy to sit for ages on my shoulder or the laptop screen.

Hello :) Welcome to the forums, I am new as well. Recently (3 days) I brought home my senegal as well. He (until DNA test says otherwise) tends to be beaky as well, but the action seems to be more like a puppy or toddler mouthing everything, rather than an actual bite.

I wish you luck. Sennies are not the best bird for first-timers and your 'learning as you go' system might backfire (parrots are forgiving but they also have long memories).
