Greetings from Frozen Colorado

Postby Weka » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:16 am

Hello everyone --

I've been lurking for awhile on this board, and thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Laura, but I go by "Weka" which is a curious New Zealand bird which, like me, is entirely flightless. I'm not a current bird owner, but am looking to adopt one sometime next year. As a girl, I had a budgie for seven years, but have not had a companion bird since that time, due to the fact that in my 20s and 30s my jobs had odd hours and/or had me traveling constantly and I didn't feel that my lifestyle would be good for such an intensely social creature.

Now I'm happily married, settled, and have a job where I work from home....all that's missing is a little feathered being to share my daily adventures with.

My husband is on board with this idea, and he's been leaning towards a slightly larger than budgie-size bird, so we've been researching the poicephalus family, as well as pionus. Ultimately, the choice will come down to finding a bird that we make a connection with, whatever its species, as we recognize that birds can have as distinct personalities as humans.

I'll try not to ask questions that have already been asked, and hope to make some fun connections.

Best,

Weka

Thanks for the warm welcome, cml and Pajarita! :D

I just posted my first question on parrot-proofing: http://theparrotforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10471#p78818 if anyone's got some thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again,

Weka

Welcome to the forum, Weka! I've noticed your posts and am really impressed -- please ask away and join in on the madness, er, I mean, fun! We've got a great group of parronts here and many on this forum, including the Great Parrot Wizard himself, are chock-full of great advice and stories and help. :D

Anyway, that's really exciting you're looking to adopt! :D

Thanks so much, GreenWing!

Yup, I've definitely got parrots on the brain. :senegal: :redbelly: :meyers: I work from home, so in between doing laundry loads or putting things together for my business, I've been researching as much as possible. A little obsessiveness is part of the fun, right?

I'm guessing that, once we bring a new bird into our home I'll be offline a little more, but will most definitely continue to come over and share what I've been learning.

I work from home, too, as a soap maker/fine artist (and inveterate student) but TRUST you will be online just as much when you bring your bird home... because you'll love to share pics and stories and just talk about being a parront ^^

So happy for you, though, in your wish to bring home a fid! :) What kind of bird are you looking into getting? Judging by your icons it looks like you're thinking of pois. :D

Ooooh, art and handmade soapmaking! That's über cool.

I'm trying very hard to be open about what kind of bird, just in case I might overlook the right match; but as you deduced, I AM rather drawn towards the poi family -- red bellieds in particular. That's how I found this forum in the first place. However I'm content to wait up to several months or longer to make sure that A) everything in the house is secure and parrot safe, B) to have met with the breeder and/or rescue several times and spoken with their past customers, and C) to have pre-arrangements for vet/emergencies/escapes and D) to have read up as much as possible before bringing a wild bundle of feathers into our lives.
