Hi from oz and some advice for clipped wings.

Postby toys.123 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 2:50 pm

Hi, my name is Jan and I live in rural Victoria, Australia. I recently added Stanley, the lutino Princess Parrot to our menagerie of animals. The breeder I got him from clipped his wings even though that's not what I asked for and I'm not a fan. It was a hard clip, with poor Stanley just starting to fly when it was done and when he tried he would hit the ground hard, nearly flying backwards..
He's just moulting everywhere now and one wing has 3-4 new feathers, but the other is way behind. Is that normal? Also, we were away recently with him being bird sat by my in laws and when I returned I noticed poor Stanley had torn one of his first flight feathers out and there was blood on the wing but no blood in his cage so I'm assuming it didn't bleed heaps, my main question is will that feather grow back? Hope someone can help

Welcome to the forum!

Hopefully it will! It's great that you've decided to allow him to regain flight, he will be a much happier bird from it. Hopefully someone with more experience of clipped birds than me can help you more.

Not a fan of clipped wings at all, and nearly cried when I found saw he'd done it.. Especially when he said Stanley was just learning to fly. The only reason we got Stanley was because I have a thing about birds in cages after an unfortunate and heartbreaking cocky I knew. Stanley comes out of his cage and exercises his wings. I understand why people do it though.

Yes, the torn feather will grow back although I don't know why he's growing the primaries in only one wing as molts are supposed to be symmetrical so they lose and grow one feather on each side at the same time. I hope it's not because the clip was not done correctly and damaged the follicles...
