Thought I better say Hi

Postby Southernrider » Tue Jan 07, 2014 6:29 pm

Hello all, I am from new zealand and have 2 birds in my flock. Mickey Finn is a Bare Eyed Corella. :cockatoo: He is 12 weeks old and hand reared. Tilly is a 3 year old Rainbow lorikeet :rainbow:
I have had birds since I was 7 (now 40ish + some). I have succesfully bred ringnecks but now starting to get interested in the bigger parrots.
Anyway Hi from NZ

...

Kia ora from Colorado!

I had the good fortune to spend a few weeks in your country last year -- absolutely stunning. And the wild birds! They had little to no fear of humans. What a treat.

Looking forward to hearing more about you and your feathered friends,

Weka

Hello Weka, yeah I saw your user name and avatar before and thought you were a kiwi at first, but you explained yourself fine. Yes the birdlife is wonderful here. The birds in the forest are beautiful. Alas they are (some) under an ever increasing threat as their natural habitat is either being destroyed or invaded by pests such as stoats and feral cats. One of the saddest of these is the slow demise of the Kakapo which is the worlds heaviest parrot (and nocturnal and flightless). We have already lost some beautiful species endemic only to New Zealand. The Moa is no more as is the Haast's Eagle, both wiped out 500 years ago by the aboriginal people of our shores, the Maori. Probably just as well as the Haast's Eagle was HUGE! A wingspan of 10ft. Not quite as wide as a Condor, but by records they were heavy birds and had "stubby" wings to be more maneuverable in the forests.
I am digressing but have a huge passion for our flora and fauna. I love this place, it is a wonderous country and we are often reminded by people from abroad just how lucky we are...
