Found lovebird

Postby naturalist » Thu Feb 27, 2014 10:20 am

I am the naturalsit and curator of animals at the Darien Nature Center in Darien, CT, and desperate to find the rightful home and owner of a lovebird found on the back deck of a home in Darien on Feb. 17th. We ended up with it because the woman who found it didn't want to keep it. We already have a conure, 4 cockatiels and a budgerigar (plus 2 Barbary Doves and a canary) in our zoo and truly do not need another psittacid. Besides, I know there must be a broken-hearted lovebird owner out there somewhere who wants their pet back home safe and sound. I believe it is a Peach-faced Lovebird with a burgundy leg band GAR 12 from a breeder in FL. This is my first attempt to put the word out on the internet and welcome ideas on other venues or formats where a person might look for information posted on lost/found birds. This is a sweet, personable bird and it is my sincere hope to get this baby back home.

First of all, thank you so much for both taking in the little guy and making the effort to find its owners. Please post (and check postings as well) on 911parrotalert.com and parrotalert.com. These are both sites where people post about their lost birds. Also, ask local avian vet's offices, bird clubs and bird rescues as well as the county shelter because people usually contact them asking if somebody found their lost bird. Last but not least, check your local craigslist for a posting and, if you don't find any, please post yourself but don't give details as to the species or the legband (lots of unscrupulous people use it).

Thanks so much! This is the kind of information I was hoping someone would have. I have done most of the suggestions you made already but was hoping that there would be a specific "lost/found parrot" web site. I will make a post to the parrot911 web site immediately. Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

Might I suggest that you mi8ght try a public service announcement on local radio stations? Again don't give band info or species info out, use that info to identify actual owners as they will se the only ones who will know the know species of bird and band info.

I think asking for the band info is a great idea but I don't think most people would actually remember all the info there - I know I don't.
