Hello From Kansas

I just wanted to say Hi from me and my fids...Ziggy 8mos old and Lucky (roughly 3 yrs) Not sure about Lucky is male or Female. but he/she is not very friendly and will try and bite everyone but me. I got Lucky because he lived in a bad enviroment with no toys or perch or much human interaction. He doesn't know how to play with toys. I did get a tent for him and he seems to love that and finally stands on a rope perch I put in his cage and not cling to the side all the time. I've tried to show him love and kindness and I let him watch Ziggy and I interact and play. But still doesn't care too much to involved. I have had Lucky now for 4 months and still I struggle to get him to let me love him..I can pet for a few seconds but that's all I can get. I let him and Ziggy out to play and fly around. They get along great together actually. (Whew) they each have their own flight cage and lots of toys and such..but Lucky seems to Squawk way too much and doesn't like people but is pretty much quiet when it's just us. He seems to really hate men. But no one can touch him but me. Ziggy was only 7 weeks old when I got him so he's ok with people..Just not my Grandson..I give them fruit a lot..they really don't care for veggies. and looking for new stuff for them to try all the time. any suggestions I'm open. I really hope Lucky comes around and will get to trust me better. He never tries to attack or bite me in any way even when I pet him. I did get him to learn step up on a stick bc I'm not sticking my hand under him to step up..LOL Anyone have suggestions for me?

Welcome Mousey125! You have beautiful birds. Kudos to you for rescuing Lucky!

As far as suggestions go, follow the taming and basic training thread from this site, and the Parrot Wizard's suggestions from the Trained Parrot blog(linked at the top of this page) and you will be off to a good start.

To get them to eat veggies, try eating in front of the birds, while making a big production about how delicious the veggies are. If you can make them jealous of you before you give it to them, they will probably eat it. And keep trying. It took my Meyer's parrot almost a year before she ate the broccoli that was in her breakfast bowl every day.

They need whole grains as well. You can sprout them and feed the birds that way, you can make birdie bread(recipes available on-line), feed things like cooked brown rice or oatmeal, and/or use you imagination. Many of us feed our birds pellets for part of their diet, but some don't.

Do you have an avian vet? It is best to locate one or more before you need them.

I'm sure people with more experience than I will help you as well, but this will get you started.
