Getting a galah

Postby Citron Shockwave » Thu Mar 20, 2014 5:47 am

Hello,
I've been searching for a new flock member and once I met a galah i fell in love and knew that I had to get one. I've been doing some research and I do have the amount of time money and space for them. my friend owns a galah and many more parrots (check his YouTube channel parrot whisperer) and he told me that I won't regret it and I'm willing to know more about these beautiful creatures.
Thanks!

You could regret it. Do you have the space? These are highly active birds and need a very large cage. They are less noisy than other Cockatoos but you can still hear them a mile away. Can you deal with that sort of noise? Can you afford it? Not just the bird but a huge cage, countless supplies, vet care? Not a decision to be taken lightly.

Welcome Citron Shockwave!

Michael is absolutely right that adopting a long-lived, noisy bird is not a step to be taken lightly. Your profile says that you already have four flighted cockatiels, but a galah is a big step from there just in terms of longevity.

I assume you've discussed requirements with your friend and know that you are ready for such a step, so I wish you all the best. Galahs are beautiful birds. Post some pictures when you get yours!

Pajarita just cause I'm 13 doesn't mean I don't have enough responsibility so please don't judge by age

My dear, it's not a matter of how responsible you might be. It's a matter of how much time, money and decision-making capability you have. You are going to school and will continue going to school (time) and depending on your parents (money and decision-making capability) for many, many years and cockatoos are VERY needy, VERY noisy, VERY destructive and VERY expensive to keep. They are birds for people who already have the money, infrastructure and stability to fit the bird's needs. You don't. I am not trying to be mean or to imply that you won't love this bird but, at your age, a VERY difficult bird that will live 60 to 80 years represents a commitment that you simply cannot fulfill. I am sorry to hurt your feelings but the life of an intelligent and very sensitive animal is at stake! Consider getting yourself a pair of cockatiels or budgies, they can be very happy in a nice, large flight cage even when you are in school - and they are not too noisy, needy (because they will have each other), destructive or expensive and can be as rewarding as a large bird is.
