Postby shea2shea » Thu May 01, 2014 12:14 am

My name is Shea and I was given an :gray: that is a joy and a delight to our family. He is my first parrot and I am so entertained by him. His name is Kale and he is 4yrs old. I had a horrible story that turned out beautiful. He flew away by my error. He had his wings clipped and I was told he couldn't fly. Kale loved sitting on my shoulders while going outside. I took him to a friend's house and the thunder scared him and he flew away. That was the longest two days of my life. To make a long story short. He survived a thunder storm, being bullied by some small birds because he was in there tree. After hours of searching two days worth. I received a phone call indicating someone found Kale. He was in the second spot on the side of a church sitting in a bush. He was glad to be home. He now walks to me to pick him up all the time. He was exhausted and thirsty. I made sure I tell people don't take a bird for granted because the wings are clipped. If they are afraid anything is possible.

Welcome aboard !
I read your story where you posted it in Michael's posting about his losing and recovery of Truman. I am so glad that you recovered Kale, your Grey, safely.

Phewww, what a scare! Glad you learned your lesson that clipping a bird does not prevent him from getting lost. I hope you will now reconsider depriving him of flight (as you learned it doesn't really work).

Thank you. I have questions and was happy to find a site that people are actually there. I didn't know how to post my story but I wanted to share. Kale is important to me and when I was reading trying to find information on recovering him I became depressed. The first line in the post was calling people who mistakenly believe their birds can't fly stupid. I'm no veterinarian but I was told clipped wings prevent birds from flying. I wanted give someone some hope. I didn't know where the post went. Will you let him know I apologize. I am glad he could fly, that may be the only thing that protected him while in the alley. He was able to sit under a ledge on a house during the storm.

Hi ;
There are no apologies needed from you as you did nothing wrong, and in fact you tried to do a good thing. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
I was truly amazed that you were able to recover your bird, Kale, at all, but you did and thankfully he was shaken but unharmed. I say this because he was clipped and that drastically reduces the chances of a safe recovery. But you also need to be aware of the fact that there are just as many stories here of parrots that could fly that were never recovered, so being a flighted bird is no guarantee of a safe recovery either.
You were trying to do the right thing for Kale when you allowed him to be clipped, but being misled when you don't know is not being stupid, it is being given the wrong advice and therefore no blame can be attached to you for that.
Kale was not trying to get away from you, he was just caught off guard by the force of the wind and although he wanted desperately to return to you, he didn't know how to, but he did keep trying and eventually you were reunited. I am glad that you were.
welcome to this forum, thank you for sharing your and Kale's story with us, and I know that it was difficult. Please feel free to share further stories about you and Kale, ask and answer questions and if I can be of assistance, I will be glad to help. Thank you !!

Bird people are very passionate about ALL birds (not only their own) and, sometimes, we go overboard in our desire to help them. The clipped versus flighted bird issue is one of those that brings out the worst in us and I, for one, am guilty of phrasing my postings in a harsh tone, sometimes. I don't mean to alienate but my assertiveness rubs some people the wrong way... But Wolf is right, it wasn't your fault, you were doing what you thought was safest for your bird. Unfortunately for us and our birds, there is lots and lots of conflicting information out there and this has harmed birds left and right... Thankfully, your story has a happy ending!
