New to forum. Parrot having seizures

Postby superfids » Fri May 02, 2014 1:36 pm

Hello everyone,

My name is Alexis and live in New York City with Suki (Congo African Grey) and two dogs.

A few days ago Suki began losing his balance, crashing into things, and thrashing uncontrollably.

I took him to the vet and was told that he's having seizures.

He has been at the vet over a day and is doing better. They gave him shots of calcium and magnesium, took x-rays and drew blood. Everything came back normal.

The vet has not been able to diagnose the cause of Suki's seizures.

Have any of you experienced this? I wish we had a diagnosis so I could take appropriate action.

I'm wondering what could be causing these seizures.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Alexis

I had a budgie that had something similar. Hopefully an avian vet knows more about this than the emergency clinic we took Cirrus to (they did say liver failure).

There are experienced people on this forum who know more than I do. One should show up any time now.

What kind of cage does he live in? I think I've read that heavy metal poisoning can lead to seizures in birds, it might be something to look into!

Has he been tested for metal poisoning? Because that's what it sounds to me...
