Hello from North Carolina

Postby Shadylabartram » Fri May 09, 2014 7:16 pm

Hello! My name Laura and I'm an animal keeper at a carnivore sanctuary in North Carolina. Our staff vet recently had a woman bring a four week old military macaw into her emergency vet clinic; he was an aggressive feeder and his previous owners were first time parrot owners (why they didn't get a weaned bird is beyond me) and they managed to jam his throat with the feeding syringe creating a fluid filled abscess. They brought him to the vet but refused to pay for the surgery and hospital visit so they relinquished him instead.

I grew up with my mom's yellow-collared macaw and offered to take the little guy in. He has minor surgery on Monday to fix the abscess and remove his cannula (feeding tube) but is eating like a champ and doing very well. He's currently 5 weeks old and eating 60ccs of formula every six hours.

I'll be sure to add pictures of him in the picture section.

I let my mom name him since she recently lost our yellow collared macaw Heathcliff to cancer at age 45 due to cancer.

As an aside, I put "no" for flight since he's still a baby and cant walk on his own let alone fly (duh). But I fully intend to keep him a BIRD and when he's ready he'll be in the air :)
