Full Time Parrot Momma

Postby luvsmallfurries » Thu May 22, 2014 6:00 pm

Hi;

Some 13 or so years ago I and my spouse at the time brought home a young Sennie. He (best guess...) was an awesome baby and grew to be a really delightful, loving (if a bit lippy!) companion. He initially bonded to me, but after about 7 years switched his bond to my spouse. He (the Sennie and I) stayed good friends, I just couldn't physically interact with him - he got kind of bighty with me.

Last year my spouse and I split and Jollup stayed with him. However, my ex has lost interest in caring and interacting with him so I recently re-homed Jollup back with me. Now I'm working on re-establishing the bond we had. It's going OK - slow. I can put my hand in the cage to arrange stuff, and he's even just starting to allow me to scritch his neck, but only through the cage bars when the door is closed.

I know it's going to be a bit of a slow go to get him back to a place where he doesn't consider me a snack...and meanwhile, we've been having great fun chatting with and at each other - and he's still really lippy!

Looking forward to getting some advice and reading the stories!

Welcome to the forum and thank you for taking him back when you realized he was been neglected. It was very kind of you, especially considering that the had 'left' you for your ex-husband :-)

If you could post a couple of better pictures of him (showing his front with his head up and his head from the side), we could tell you if he is indeed a he or a she (looks like a he but it's hard to tell from the picture you posted)

Thanks Pajarita. I'll snap a couple of new photos during the day when the light is better. I certainly hope he's a he...it will take a lot of retraining myself to switch to she if he's not!

How's this? Sorry about the lighting - he's near a window and I don't have it in me to move the cage this morning!

Thanks you two. Just out of curiosity - what's the feature you're seeing that convinces you he's a he? I've read lots about how to visually make a gender call - stance, depth of the V on the chest, over all size, head size...but I don't have anything to compare him to other than pictures.

LOL- All of the ones you mentioned. Males usually stand 'taller' on the perch while females do it lower (it's not quite crouching but something like it); the green V vertex is higher on the chest of the males, showing much more yellow than the females whose Vs are longer, their vertices reaching almost all the way down so they show less yellow; the males chests are deeper and their necks thicker, and their profiles show a 'flatter' or more 'square' look to the top of their heads than the females whose heads are the tiniest bit smaller and rounder. But these differences don't show until they reach a certain age because, when they are juveniles and young adults they all look almost the same except for the V. And, of course, you need to see a male and female sie by side so you can compare.
