Hello everyone!

My name is Angelika.(from the Netherlands :D) I've recently become the proud owner of a Black-headed caique. (20 weeks old) It took some time for me to give him/her a name since I have no idea if he/she is a male or female, but after some thinking I came up with the name Monty.

I wasn't planning on getting a bird in the first place. I had visited the pet store to buy food for my sister's rats and I noticed this big tree with lots of different birds in it. Me being curious and all went over to take a look. At the bottom of the tree I saw these 2 black-headed caiques and one of them was on his/her back just looking at me and I thought this to be very adorable! To make a long story short, I fell in love with this birdie.

Since it's my first bird, I kind of need to learn a lot about diet, training etc! I've been reading a lot online to learn more and figured it would be a good idea to sign up to a forum where I could ask questions in case I have them.

I could write a book here about how much I love Monty and how adorably playful he/she is, but I will leave it at this for now. (Though, if people would like me to, don't hesitate to ask! ;D)

I'm hoping to learn a lot from reading threads on this forum aaaannddd.. that's all!

Excuse me for not asking already, but how long have you had Monty? What are you feeding him? How much time do you spend with him playing or what ever? Have you figured out his favorite food yet? When you get the chance I would like to hear all about him, with pictures, of course.

I have Monty for 2 and a half weeks now. At the pet store they gave me NutriBird P15 pellets and a seed mix with dried fruits. Besides that I feed her fresh fruit and vegetables every day. She's not picky at all when it comes to food and will try everything I offer her. (unless it has a strong smell to it, then I leave it for some other time to try again) I think her favorite food is an apple!

I work from 5 till 7 in the morning, she's still sleeping during those hours. I think I spend almost all day with her. When I eat I will either put her in her cage or put her on her tree which I placed in front of a window. (she really likes to look at what happens outside) But she's out of the cage most of the time playing with me, my parents or sister.

I've posted some pictures today on the 'Show your flock' thread, but I shall post another one here!

Have you taken Monty in for her first checkup, yet? Did they tell you at the pet store that you need to get your bird a wellness exam? Or that you should get it as soon after you get your bird as possible?
I live in USA ,so there are probably different regulations about birds there, But it really doesn't matter, you need to see that this first visit to the vet happens. It is probably one of the most important vet visits that there if for Monty.

I saw your pictures on the other thread and you have such an adorable little bird friend. Looking forward to hearing about Monty's and your adventures. Thanks for sharing with us.

I have called the closest avian vet near my town, there aren't many of them around here. She was on vacation but she should be back and give me a call tomorrow or wednesday. Hopefully ASAP cause I want to make sure that Monty is healthy. :)
