Hello from India!

Postby parama » Mon Jun 23, 2014 10:56 am

Hello!
I am from India. I have a 13 years old Alexandrian parrot, Tabol, who isnt to communicative and pretty much keeps himself busy.He is also quiet aggressive if we go too close to the cage. The only exception is my dad who he is very fond of. But overall he is quiet an active and happy bird and is amazingly friendly with other birds and creatures.
Now recently (3 weeks back) we rescued a young alexandrian who was found fallen and trembling on the road. This new bird, Abol, (we dont know the gender yet) is not afraid at all of human presence. It dosent seem to be very friendly but it is not aggressive either.
Now Tabol seems to be trying hard to catch the younger one's attention but the younger one avoids and ignores him completely.
I just wanted to know if I should put them in the same cage together? (right now they are in two different cages) If yes then ideally when and how?
And also how to start taming and training them?

Welcome to the forum parama!

I am not an expert, but this should get you started until the experts show up.

Are Alexandrine parrots native to your area? If not, your new friend may be someone's lost pet. I would be frantic if my bird buddie got lost, and looking everywhere for it, so I would recommend trying to find where Abol came from.

If he/she fell out of a nest and the parents are gone, you may want to feed him/her soft foods several times a day to be sure Abol is properly weened.

You should probably keep the birds' cages quarantined (separated by a significant distance -different rooms if possible) for at least a month in any case to avoid any contagious diseases that Abol might have from making Tabol sick.

It is generally not recommended to cage parrots together unless you have a mated pair or a large aviary. If Abol is an adult, after the quarantine period, consider slowly bringing the cages together, but still out of reach. Then you might be able to have them out of cage at the same time (See http://trainedparrot.com/Introducing_Parrots/ )

If the birds choose each other, you can keep them in one cage. However, it sounds like Abol may be too young to go live with Tabol, and keeping the distance between them could be necessary to Abol keeping all his/her toes.

I do know that both the Indian Ringneck and the Alexandrian are native to parts of India and that they are in fact very similar birds.
I know that you can usually tell the male and female apart, at least in the adults, so pictures of them showing all sides of the bird may allow us to tell you if you have male or female birds.
I agree with the quarantine period for this new bird especially since it was found on the road. Being found on the road suggests that it may have fallen from its nest, while the fact that it is not afraid of humans suggests that someone has lost their bird and may be looking for it.
I always suggest that you spend whatever time is needed in 15 min. sessions at least a couple of times per day just talking to the bird and offering an occasional treat until the bird comes to you and takes the treat from you. I do it this way as it is the best way that I know of , for the bird, to build trust.
I would not recommend putting these birds together until you have at least gone through the taming process. After that may be fine but you will need to introduce them to each other slowly. You don't want them to injure each other.

Yes, most likely, Abol is a baby or a juvenile that either fell of the nest or got somehow separated from its parents. And that's the reason why he is not aggressive, because babies never are. To put them together you will have to wait until Abol is older and see if the birds bond. For that, you will have to allow them to interact outside the cages and watch them carefully and see how they act with one another. But you can't do it just one day and decide right then and there that they do like each other because it doesn't work like that, you would have to do it every day for a couple of weeks to make sure. My worry is that you did not seem to do a very good job with Tabol and, once you add Abol to the equation, Tabol would get even more aggressive... especially if Abol ends up been a female! Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with birds that are just birds and not human pets because, as long as they have other birds, they are actually happier than the ones that depend on us for love. But they need a LARGE aviary as they cannot live in a little cage and never come out (which is what usually happens with aggressive birds). Birds were not created to be kept in cages, they suffer physically (it's VERY unhealthy, their respiratory system and muscles atrophy, and tendons shrink) and emotionally (they live in jail all their lives and, in most cases, lonely and depressed) so, when we keep them as our pets, they need to come out of their cages for 4 or 5 hours a day to fly and interact with us and, if for some reason, they can't, they need a cage large enough for them to fly back and forth and other birds as company.

PS why did you call them such similar names? They are going to get all confused about it because Tabol and Abol sound the same.
