Postby akki » Sun Jul 06, 2014 11:16 am

Hi all!!

I am 30 years old, female, married, proud owner of two incredibly sweet lovebirds - Saffron and Juju. They are over 1 year old now. They are naughty, chewy birds with a huge personality

We currently live in the Netherlands, but we in a process of moving to Montreal, Canada. Exciting times!!! The birds, obviously, come with us

Hope to meet all of you!!

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your time before and after your move. I have moved all across the States, but have never moved across an ocean before. It must be quite an experience, looking forward to hearing about it.

Gulp, it is. I am not too much worried for us, but I am a bit worried for our birds how they are going to take the trip :swaying:

Nice to meet you neighbour!! My husband works in UQAM, so we are most probably going to stay somewhere within 30 min commuting time from UQAM :) My husband is in Montreal already, he is looking for an apt for us and the birds, that would suit as a quarantine premises - fingers crossed! We all move in October-November I guess. So I still don't know where exactly, but it's going to be Montreal for sure :)

You'll love it I'm sure ! Montreal is a big city, but it can feel homy depending on where you decide to go. But plenty to choose from !

Oh I am sorry I wasn't here for a while. So we are in Montreal! We are all safe and sound, and our birds took the trip very well, went through quarantine, had a nest afterwards and now we have an adorable and gorgeous Ned Junior! He is so cheeky and unbelievably cute that we decided to keep him! I hibernated throughout the winter and now doing the same in these unbelievably hot days :) Life is good!

Well, without any problems is a bit of understatement :D, as a couple of weeks before our planned departure, there was an avian flu outbreak in the Netherlands, our import permit was revoked without letting us know. I found out friday midnight local time before our departure, while Monday 8 am birds had to handed over at the cargo agent in the airport. Yikes. Luckily the import agency vets in Canada where super helpful. Our vet who was responsible for our case, was making phone calls throughout the weekend, somebody in Ontario came in the office on Saturday and issued us an amendment, allowing us to fly, as where we were living in the Netherlands, was outside the restricted zone of the outbreak. Also, KLM was considering to shut down all the export traffic of avians, due to same reason. It was beyond stressful, but ah well, we made it.

Now I have started to look for a mate for Junior, as his hormones are kicking in, so I expect some trouble with him staying with his parents. I think it will be much more challenging, because I am looking specifically for parent-raised, but fully socialized lovebird kid, preferably from parents tested for three main parrot diseases. Given that finding organic seed mix was 6 month challenge, I consider finding a mate for my Junior just as likely as US gun ban :D
