Hello, from Kentucky!

Postby ShelbyLRay » Wed Jul 23, 2014 7:16 pm

:gcc: Hello, my future best friends and advice gurus! In about two weeks (hopefully less) I'll be purchasing my first green cheek conure! I've had birds before, and without having access to the internet, I've now realized I took everything in the wrong direction in the past. Now with about a year of research and visiting breeders and pet stores, I've come to the conclusion that I'm definitely ready to open myself up to a wonderful little green cheek. At a wonderful price of only $100, this little girl/guy will probably be the best pet I've ever owned. I've rearranged my schedule for the next 30 years  and made time for my bird. I've prepared myself for some noise, some biting, and also some scary times when my bird might fly around my room and land on my ceiling fan and not come down for a while (the fan doesn't work). If ANYBODY has any advice for me, please, go ahead. Talk to me like I'm a idiot, because I'm really new to the whole "advanced/basic bird keeping" subject. I want to give my little Pilot the best life possible, and that's why you all are my advice gurus. Thanks for all your future help, and I plan on hearing from the majority of you soon!!!

Hi! I'm also new to this forum! It's going to be great for us to grow together. At least one thing we all have in common is we all want the best lives for our birds!

I used to have a little Green Cheek :gcc:
His name was Hashmeer and he was the sweetest little guy. Now whenever I see GCC at the local pet store I like to stop and talk to them for a little while.

Welcome to the forum!

You too! I had a parakeet, she was the brightest color yellow I have ever seen. I didn't know they needed anything more than seeds in their diets, and she had a relatively short lifespan compared to properly fed parakeets. :(

That's understood. I had budgies before (belonged to my parents) and although we swear that Sid (the male) was running around with T-Rex in his youth, his mate did not last very long comparatively :? Then he died soon after the poor thing.

I am excited to hear more about all of our birdies!! :gcc:

Parakeets, by this I refer to the budgie, are primarily seed eaters although they should have some fresh produce as well. They can do a lot better than other species on an all seed diet. I really think that it's short life may have had more to do with it being a genetic mutation than from an all seed diet, although that didn't help.

Welcome to the forum. GCCs are wonderful little birds as long as you devote hours and hours to 'shoulder time' to them and, if you do, you won't get any bites or screams at all.

Budgies do better than other species with an all-seed diet but they need greens everyday (no hardship as they love them) and a bit of supplements. Mine eat gloop in the morning and they love it.

I got him from a pet store, and there were probably 40-50 meets in a cage big enough for about 15. He was probably always malnourished and the lone seeds I was giving him didn't help. He also had an 18" tall x12" deep x12" wide. I could have gotten a bigger cage for him but I thought, hey, small bird small cage. I have a completely different outlook on bird keeping now :D my conure's cage is pretty large, and I'll probably get another one in the future to accommodate another bird along with my Pilot. I can't wait to get my bird!!! :gcc:
