Just got a quick report on Tanya's blood work. It was not her vet who called, this vet was just calling because I had called for a report.

Tanya's cholesterol was still very high, but her bile acid levels, while still elevated, had improved since June.

Her vet will call me back on Monday, when she is back in.

You need to put her on gloop instead of pellets (the oats, barley, flax seeds and artichokes are ALL natural cholesterol reducers). You can also supplement her with CoQunol, artichoke leaf extract and red rice yeast BUT you need to make sure that it is the extract and not just the powder, that the citrinin has been removed (it should say so) and that it contains no lovastatin or monacolin K (none of the supplements should have either because they were banned in 2007 and, if you get the kind that its content and quality has been certified by an independent lab -either USP or NSF- it will be OK).

In any case, if the liver values are beginning to get better, the cholesterol levels will go down too as the liver becomes more functional - it just takes time for these things to get better and she was not getting gloop in her foster home but pellets which are no good for birds with liver damage so be patient and keep with the detox treatment and supplements and she will get better.

I'm bringing her in again on Thursday. She's going to do more tests, including getting a breakdown of the cholesterol into components.

She also may biopsy a limpoma. I wonder if reabsorbing the limpomas could continue to feed her cholesterol levels for a while?

I also want to get an handle on how much gloop to be giving her. She will eat as much as I give her.

I will measure out how much gloop that I give Mimi tomorrow morning. I usually feed around 8 am, but can measure it out earlier if you need to know before then. I have just used the last of what I have thawed so I can't measure it out for you right now. Mimi always has plenty left over, probably about a teaspoon to 1 1/2 teaspoons left when I feed her at dinner time. I can measure it out any time after 4 am as I am normally awake about then. If you think that will help. Mimi is a healthy Yellow Naped Amazon. I am guessing that it will measure out to be close to 1/3 cup of gloop for breakfast and all day long.

I give mine as much glop/chop as they can eat, but I feed the items with fat seperately so I can control the amount of fat intake.

Me too, I give them extra and always get rid of the leftover when I feed them their dinner which is the only food they get with fat and high protein, anyway. Gloop/chop does not make them fat at all so there is no need to measure it.

I Haven't ever measured mine either, which is why I would have to wait until it thaws out to measure it. I have always just given it to them and if they were getting low then I would give them a little more. Or if they were consistently leaving too much cut it back a little bit. I don't mind measuring for Navre as I am sure that it will just give him a starting point.

I weighed the frozen pucks of gloop I have. They're between 50 and 70 grams.

If Tanya can't get fat from eating too much gloop, then I won't worry about it.
(But I DO have a 300lb, vegan cousin. I suppose anything can make you fat if you're taking in more calories than you're burning.)
